Gordon Smith won two events and several other Seattle University swimmers posted top five performances Friday on the first day of the PCSC Pentathlon Invite meet hosted by Cal Baptist University.

Gordon Smith (Kennewick, Wash.) won two events and several other Seattle University swimmers posted top five performances Friday on the first day of the PCSC Pentathlon Invite meet hosted by Cal Baptist University.

Smith won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.21 as Seattle took four of the top six positions in that event. Bryant Bevers (Federal Way, Wash.) finished in third place (1:47.01), Nathan Freeman (Phoenix, Ariz.) took fourth place (1:47.14), and Andrew Martinez (Concord, Calif.) earned a sixth-place finish (1:48.88). Smith also won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:45.92, with Freeman finishing fourth (4:49.62) and Bevers earning sixth place (4:56.30). Smith also finished second in the 100 freestyle (48.87) and leads the freestyle pentathlon with a combined time of 7:53.74.

Chris Coley (Austin, Texas) finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.36, with Kevin Daniels (Newcastle, Wash.) finishing in fifth in the same event in 54.04 seconds. Doug Djang (Seattle, Wash.) finished second in the 100 breaststroke (59.22), third in the 100 backstroke (55.97), and third in the 200 individual medley (2:02.86). Bryson Chiu (Carmel, Ind.) finished just ahead of Djang in the 200 IM (2:02.62) after finishing fifth in the 100 backstroke (56.87) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.77). Djang is second and Chiu fourth in the long medley pentathlon.

The women’s team was led by Alex Weiss (Reno, Nev.), who finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:03.33), fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.08), and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:18.13). Carole Triem (Petersburg, Alaska) just missed winning the 100 breaststroke (1:10.13) and also notched a fifth place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:03.83). Heather Nelson (Bremerton, Wash.) finished in tenth place in the 100 butterfly (1:02.96) and ninth in the 200 IM (2:20.60), while Francesca Reale (Gig Harbor, Wash.) earned a sixth place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:04.38).

Taylor Olson (Parker, Colo.) finished second in the 25 freestyle with a time of 11.72 seconds. After finishing in sixth place in the 25 free in 11.79 seconds, Kelsey Henan (Billings, Mont.) earned a tenth place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:22.04), just behind ninth place finisher Christina Hunsberger (Bellevue, Wash.), who finished in 5:20.22. After a seventh place finish in the 50 breaststroke (32.99), Sarah Shannon’s (Issaquah, Wash.) best race came in the 100 individual medley, where she finished third in a time of 1:03.58.

The team will continue competition Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. The first home meet for the SU swim teams takes place Thursday, Oct. 18, against Loyola Marymount beginning at 4 p.m. at the Connolly Center pool.
