Seattle Men’s Soccer shuts out UC San Diego 2-0

Jason Cascio scores both goals in the win

The #13 Men’s soccer team (8-2) topped UC San Diego (2-7-1) at Championship Field on Friday afternoon in a non-conference game by the score of 2-0. Jason Cascio (Gilbert, Ariz.) scored both goals for to give him five for the season.

The first goal came in the 32nd minute when Cascio received a long ball and left it for Cameron Mertens (Kennewick, Wash.) who then one touched it back to Cascio. Cascio, last season’s GNAC Player of the Year, then drove a shot in the upper side netting for a spectacular goal. The assist was the first of the season for Mertens.

After returning from halftime Cascio found the net again, this time in the 60th minute. Freshman Nick James (Kirkland, Wash.) recorded his first assist and point as a Redhawk when he fought for a loose ball in the box and slipped it through to Cascio who directed the ball into the back of the net.

dominated play for most of the game recording a 21-7 advantage in shots and earning six corners without allowing one against them.

Emerson DeOliveira (Normandy Park, Wash.) was solid in goal, earning his fourth shutout. DeOliveira made just one save, but it came at a crucial time in the first half when the game was still scoreless.

The backline directed play throughout the match. Chris Hodges (Redmond, Wash.), David Raney (Lynwood, Wash.), Dustin Allbery (Spokane, Wash.), and Eric Forner (Sacramento, Calif.) controlled the ball and found their wings and forwards to facilitate the offense.

returns to Championship Field on Monday, October 1 at 2:30 pm to face ’s in GNAC action. It will be the first meeting with ’s as the Saints are sponsoring varsity soccer for the first time this season.
