2006: Despite missing the last eight matches of the season with an injury, Mertens was still voted GNAC Co-Freshman of the Year for his performance during the season. He scored two goals in Seattle[apos]s 8-0 victory at Chaminade on Sept. 13. Mertens picked up two assists in Seattle[apos]s 4-1 win over Cal State Stanislaus on Aug. 28. He also earned an assist on Sept. 23 as the Redhawks defeated Simon Fraser, 4-0. He finished seventh on the team with seven total points.
2005: Mertens did not play during the season.
2004: Mertens redshirted in his first season at Seattle University.
Southridge HS: Mertens was a four-time all-Big 9 selection and led the conference in scoring his senior year with 12 goals...also led his team in scoring all four years of high school...a two-time team captain with the Suns...his club team, Three Rivers United U-17, were Washington state champions in 2002...also played football in high school.
