CANTON, Mass. - Sophomore Zoe Rubichon led the way with a top-three finish and three Redhawks placed in the top 15 as the Seattle University women's golf team placed second in a 15-team field at the Red Bandanna Invitational.
In Rubichon's best finish of the young season, she tied for third place individually with +4 over, 220 and a season-best round of even par, 72 in the final round. This is Rubichon's second-best finish of her career, only beaten out by her second place finish at the Bobcat Desert Classic last season.
Fellow sophomore Blayne Brown also had a season-best top 10 finish, coming in 10th with +10 over, 226 with a best round of +3 over, 75 in both the first and the third rounds with four birdies apiece. This is Brown's fourth top-10 finish of her career.
Alayna Rafique made a statement in her collegiate debut, placing 13th and carding +13 over, 229. She steadily improved throughout the competition, with a first round of +6 over, 78, a second round of +4 over, 76, and finally completing competition with her career-best round of +3 over, 75.
Melissa Gilloz also had a season-best finish, placing just outside of the top 35 at 38th with +21 over, 237 and a season-best round of +5 over, 77.
Rounding out the roster, Jeanne Padillo had a rougher tournament, with +25 over, 241 and ending day one 22 strokes over par, however she had a critical third round that helped the Redhawks secure second place with +3 over, 75 and three birdies.
"I am so proud of the women’s team finish," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "We didn’t have our A game this week, but still battled to a respectable finish, especially traveling so far from home. We have a squad that I am excited about, and overall we had an amazing experience in Boston; we are so appreciative for the opportunity. A huge congratulations to Zoe on her top-five performance as well."
Seattle U next takes action in October, when they host the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational from October 5-6 at Tacoma Country & Golf Club in Tacoma, Wash.
