SEATTLE — The Seattle U cross country team is earning honors in its first year in the West Coast Conference.
Kristina Shkalenkova and Annabelle Clapp were named to the WCC's All-Academic Team, announced Thursday morning. Dan Barreto, Aidan Loeffelman, Lydia Dale, Diana Camargo Solis and Azalea Groleau were listed as honorable mentions for a total of seven Redhawks being recognized.
The selection of Shkalenkova and Clapp gave Seattle U two representatives on the 10-member women’s team, giving the Redhawks the third-most women’s team selections in the conference.
Shkalenkova is double majoring in business accounting and analytics; Clapp is majoring in nursing.
To be up for consideration, student athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, with at least sophomore athletic and academic standing and one year completed at their current school and must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s season events.
Several of Seattle U’s recipients are familiar with all-academic distinctions. It’s the second time Shkalenkova has been honored with an all-academic team selection. In 2024, she was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Groleau, a nursing major, and Camargo Solis, a kinesiology major, also were named to the 2024 WAC All-Academic Team.
Barreto, majoring in kinesiology, is no stranger to awards either, having also been a WAC All-Academic selection in 2024. Clapp and Dale each are majoring in nursing, while Loeffelman is majoring in kinesiology. Groleau, also a nursing major, added another honor to her decorated collegiate career.
The success in the classroom was accompanied by feats on the course for this group of Redhawks. Groleau recorded the third-fastest 5k in Seattle U history at the Charles Bowles Invite on Oct. 4, while Camargo-Solis ran the 19th-fastest 5k in school history at the same meet. Also at that meet, Clapp ran a personal-best 5k of 18:29.8, finishing 49th in the meet. Dale and Shkalenkova both set personal-bests in the 5k as well as the 6k in the 2025 season.
Barreto set personal-bests in the 8k and the 10k, and Loeffelman set his season-best 8k in the Bronco Invitational on Oct. 18.
