SALEM, ORE. — There’s a new member on Seattle University’s all-time 5k podium.
Azalea Groleau set a new personal record with a time of 17:23.20 in Saturday’s Charles Bowles Invitational, marking the third best women's cross country 5k in school history by fractions of a second over Olivia Stein. Already the track and field 5k school record holder, Groleau broke her own cross country 5k personal best by two seconds – she ran a 17:25 at the Willamette Invitational in 2023. Groleau finished seventh overall in Saturday’s meet, contributing to an eighth place finish for the women’s team.
It was a good day to set PR’s for the Redhawks all around, as the women’s team took advantage of the 5k format. Diana Camargo Solis (18:13.20), Annabelle Clapp (18:29.80), Mira Danish (18:37.80) and Lydia Dale (18:42.40) all recorded career bests in a banner day for Seattle U.
Five Redhawks finished in the top 60 individually in a large field that included 28 team entries, predominantly from Oregon.
The men’s team raced the 8k, and saw PR’s come crashing down in similar fashion. Roman Radecki continued an eye-popping start to his collegiate career with a personal best of 24:57.17, finishing 42nd overall and leading the way for the men’s team to finish in 15th place.
Seku Sanders (25:26.06) and Dan Barreto (25:36.44) followed Radecki with personal bests of their own. Freshman Eli Perez (27:08.64) added to an impressive string of youth performances with an early-career personal best.
Seattle U will next travel to Santa Clara, Calif., for the Bronco Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 18.
