QUICK HITS

  • The season-opening matchup with the Pioneers comes just three days after the announcement that the teams will begin competing as West Coast Conference foes next season. Denver will join the WCC beginning in 2026-27, bringing the league to 11 full-time members next year.
  • That will mark the second time that Seattle U and Denver have been conference rivals after both competing in the Western Athletic Conference during the 2012-13 season.
  • Seattle U returns five letterwinners, including three starters – Maleek Arington, Brayden Maldonado and John Christofilis – from its 2024-25 squad.
  • The Redhawk roster also includes two redshirts and eight new players. The new faces include a quartet of transfers –  Junseok Yeo (Gonzaga), Austin Maurer (Grand Canyon), Brock Felder (Southern Utah) and Jojo Murphy (Chico State).
  • The 2024-25 Redhawks were among the nation’s best in free throw attempts per game (15th, 24.0), made free throws per game (17th, 17.1), turnover margin (31st, 3.0), scoring defense (34th, 66.4 ppg), turnovers forced per game (35th, 14.38) and steals per game (48th, 8.1).
  • John Christofilis has poured in 113 threes in two seasons at SU, putting him in striking distance of entering the SU all-time top-10 list this year. Sitting tied for 10th are Mack Junior (95-99) and Arne Klubberud (95-99), each with 144 career threes.
  • Maleek Arington enters the season with 802 career points and will eye becoming a third member of the 2025-26 squad to surpass 1,000 career points. He would join Jojo Murphy (1,369 career points) and Brayden Maldonado (1,012 career points).

ABOUT THE SERIES VS DENVER

  • Seattle U and Denver have nine previous meetings, with the Redhawks leading the all-time series 5-4.
  • The teams last met during the 2018-19 season in the first game of Seattle U’s Elgin Baylor Classic. The Redhawks won handedly, 82-63, in the Redhawk Center behind 26 points from Morgan Means and 15 from Matej Kavas. Terrell Brown, Jr., had a near triple double, finishing with eight points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
  • The teams met twice during 2012-13 season when both competed as members of the Western Athletic Conference. That year marked Seattle U’s first in the WAC, following the four-year transition period to return to NCAA Division I. Denver won both meetings that season.
  • The Redhawks and Pioneers will once again become conference foes starting with the 2026-27 season after it was announced on Friday, Oct. 31 that Denver would join the West Coast Conference.
  • The all-time series dates back to the 1956-57 season when the teams met in Pocatello, Idaho, to open the season.
  • The teams went on to play twice in 1968 and 1970. Nearly 40 years passed before they would meet again in 2009.

SEATTLE STORYLINES

  • 2025-26 marks the Redhawks’ return the West Coast Conference. Seattle U was a one time member of the then West Coast Athletic Conference from 1971-1980, before dropping from NCAA Division I. The university was accepted into the West Coast Conference on May 10, 2024 and began its return to competition in the WCC in fall 2025.
  • Seattle U has three international players hailing from Asia Pacific countries, including senior Junseok Yeo (South Korea), sophomore Houran Dan (China) and redshirt-freshman Yuto Kawashima (Japan).
  • Based on roster data provided to the NCAA by member institutions, Yeo is the lone player from Korea on a Division I roster, Dan is one of just five players from China on a DI roster and Kawashima is one of seven players from Japan on a DI roster.
  • • Seattle U will host all four other Division I programs in the state of Washington during the 2025-26 season. The Redhawks host Eastern Washington on Nov. 12, Washington on Dec. 19, Washington State on Dec. 30 and Gonzaga on Jan. 17.
