EDMONDS, WA - Seattle U baseball split their first two games with Utah Valley, 4-14 and 14-10, Saturday afternoon at Triton Field in Edmonds. The Redhawks dropped the series opener in a seven-inning 10-run ruled game before bouncing back with an offensive explosion in the second.
GAME 1
Game one started yesterday at Pierce College in Lakewood, WA, but was rained out after the 4th inning of play with the game tied at four apiece. The game was resumed the next day at Triton Field in Edmonds, where the Wolverines would score 10 runs over the next three innings to take the series opener in seven.
All four Redhawk runs were driven in by Kenny Ishikawa and Sam Kane, who both had two RBI while going 1-for-3 the plate. The only other SU hit came from Tyler Peterson as the they were shutout after the resumption of the game.
Blake Smith made the start in the game, going 3.0 IP while giving up three earned and striking out three in a no-decision outing. Rafael Espinoza (1-4) was credited with the loss after four earned over three innings of relief work. Kaden Alberghini also made an appearance, giving up six in the final inning of the game.
GAME 2
The Redhawks jumped all over the Wolverines to start game two, scoring nine runs over the first three innings while also keeping UVU off the board. After tacking another run on in the 5th, they had a chance to repay the 10-run rule heading into the 6th inning.
Utah Valley would score make a comeback and score nine runs between the 6th and 7th innings to make it 13-10. Seattle U would get an insurance in the bottom of the 7th to make it a 4-run game and would blank UVU in their final two plate appearances to secure the victory.
Kenny Ishikawa led the way in the hit department in game two, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Jared Stevenson and Tyler Peterson both drove in three runs, with Sam Kane and Brandon Stinnett closely behind with two each.
Luke Alwood had the start, giving up just one earned over three innings. Micah Hagler (1-1) was the first arm out of the pen and was the one credited with the win, as he allowed one earned over 3.1 IP. It was Hagler's first win of the season, and his first Division I win as well.
After splitting the games, the Redhawks moved to 9-13 on the season and to 1-1 in conference play. They will look to take the series in tomorrow's rubber match, slated for a 12:00pm PT first pitch back at Triton Field.
