LA JOLLA, CA - Seattle U baseball dropped their match up with #21 UC Santa Barbara, 3-9, Friday afternoon in California. The Redhawks struck early with homeruns from Kenny Ishikawa and Sam Kane, but eight unanswered runs from the Gauchos saw them denied their first win of 2025.
"Our guys did a great job against (Tyler) Bremner, who is a projected 1st round draft pick," said head coach Donny Harrel. "The 5th inning just killed us with the three errors and a non-play in the outfield."
The three Redhawk runs came on the first homerun of the season for Ishikawa, a solo shot in the 1st inning, an RBI single by Jared Stevenson in the 2nd, and the second solo homerun in as many games from Kane in the 3rd.
On the mound, Blake Smith (0-2) went five innings in his second start of the season while giving up three earned on five hits. Kaden Alberghini and Patrick Galvin both also made their second appearances out of the pen on the season.
"Smith threw well against a top 20 team and Alberghini saved our bullpen for the rest of the weekend with quality innings," Harrel added of his arms. "The offense could not generate any runs off their bullpen, so we need to make better adjustments moving forward."
Seattle U now drops to 0-5 on the season, with all five games coming in the Golden State. They will once again be back in action in the Tony Gwynn Legacy tomorrow when they face Utah in San Diego. First pitch between the Redhawks and Utes is scheduled for 1:00pm PT.
