PHOENIX, Ariz. - Seattle U volleyball concluded its final road trip of the regular season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-12) loss to Grand Canyon at Global Credit Union Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Merima Smajlovic paced the team for the second match in a row, locking up 10 kills to go along with seven digs. She hit .261 on 23 attacks with two errors, while also grabbing an assist and a block.
Senior Arianna Bilby added an additional seven kills, hitting .211 on 19 attacks with three errors. She racked up five digs and an ace.
Redshirt sophomore Yasemin Elmas added five kills hitting .333 on nine attempts with two errors. Sophomore Tatum Chase and junior Marley Hardgrave each tacked on four kills, with Chase hitting .400 on ten attacks with no errors.
Freshman Anae Asuncion paced the team with 17 assists while fellow freshman Grace Jones added 12 assists of her own. Jones ended the day with an ace and five digs.
On the defensive side, senior Katlyn Sipes added an additional six digs, while Hardgrave, Elmas, Smajlovic and sophomore Taniyah Pruitt each accounted for a block assist.
As a unit, the Redhawks recorded 33 kills, hitting .205 while picking up 32 assists, 28 digs, two aces and two blocks. Despite breaking through with double-digit kills in the first two sets, the Lopes swung back just as hard, ending the match hitting .494 on 81 attacks for 45 kills.
The Redhawks led by as many as two in both the first and second sets, but GCU scoring runs proved to stifle any Seattle U momentum aimed to turn the tide. The Lopes acted as a wall at the net, collecting nine blocks to thwart the Redhawk offense late in the match. Errors also fell in favor of the Lopes, with Seattle U accruing 16 on the day to GCU's five.
Despite the loss, Seattle U's WAC tournament hopes remain alive. The Redhawks need one more win and some help from one of their WAC opponents to secure a Tarleton State loss. With two more matches left in the regular season, Seattle U returns home to host both Utah Tech and Tarleton State.
