PAYSON, Ariz. - Seattle U women's golf claimed its program's first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship on Sunday evening, posting the day's best round of 10-over 294 to defeat Abilene Christian by two strokes. The event took place at The Rim Golf Club at Chapparal Pines on the 6,235 yards course with a par of 71.
"This is such a special group that I knew our time was coming," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "We had a really fun week together and put in a total team effort to get this done. The personalities on this team really balance out and compliment one another. I am just happy to be able to share this very special moment with them. I received multiple compliments from onsite members about how impressed they are by the team's ability to brush off challenging moments, stay present and continue to fight. It just speaks volumes about who they are as people, how they show up and the fact that they are bought into what we teach."
The winner of the last two WAC Golfer of the Week, Rivekka Jumagulova continued her stellar play for the Redhawks as she tied for sixth place at 11-over 224 (72-75-77).
Aaryanna Morris (74-80-71) and Annika Cruz (82-74-69) provided stellar final rounds to propel the Redhawks into first place, finishing tied for 10th with three-round totals of 12-over 225. Cruz's final round score of two-under 69 marked the best single round performance by any golfer this weekend. Morris followed up Cruz's effort with the only other round that was even or under par on the last day.
After a slow start on the opening day saw them in sixth place, the Redhawks began their comeback effort in the second round with the tournament's second best overall team round at 10-over 294.
Tsara Ralamboarison (77-72-78) and Shayna Lu (81-73-77) posted strong second rounds to allow Seattle U the chance to get back into the tournament. Ralamboarison marked the fourth Redhawk to finish inside the top-15, tying for 13th overall at 14-over 227.
"These women know they are not done," said Chandonnet. "We got one of the hard parts done and we believe in our abilities to push for a ticket to the National Championship. I want to thank my assistant coach, Michelle Duan, for all her hard work and support. She has brought a very special energy to our group and an appreciation for the opportunity to help support these young women."
The 2024 NCAA Tournament selection show will air Wednesday, April 24, at 11 a.m. pacific time on the Golf Channel. The NCAA Regionals then take place May 6-8, followed by the championship finals from May 17-22 in Carlsbad, California.
