GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Rivekka Jumagulova of Seattle U women's golf captured medalist honors at the 2024 Bobcat Desert Classic on Wednesday afternoon, setting a new program record for lowest 54 hole total with a three-round score of 12-under (66-67-71) 204. The Redhawks finished in second place out of 17 teams, setting a new low 54 hole total program record of eight-under 856. The event took place at Golf Club of Estrella with yardage of 6,180 and par of 72.
"I am incredibly proud of how our team continued to battle all week," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "Winning in our sport is never easy but we gave ourselves another opportunity, showing off all the hard work and that everyone has bought into the process. Rivekka was on absolute fire this week in all facets of her game but most importantly demonstrating how much her short game has improved. Congratulations to her on another collegiate victory and in a record fashion."
Jumagulova came out of the gates strong in the opening round, tying for the second lowest round in program history at six-under 66. The junior was fantastic on the back nine, converting birdies on five of the nine holes with three coming in a row (13-15).
The Almaty, Kazakhstan, native continued that great play on the second day, shooting a five-under 67 to post the program's new record through 36 holes at 11-under 133. She was stellar once again on the back nine, converting four straight birdies from holes 12-15.
Jumagulova sealed the program's new 54 hole record with a one-under 71 on the final day, claiming the individual title by four strokes. She becomes the second Redhawk in the modern era to claim multiple medalist honors in her SU career, joining Caitlin McCleary who took home four titles in her four years.
Jumagulova's strong performance in the first two rounds helped the Redhawks to their second best single team round scores in program history at five-under 283. Seattle U also set a new low 36 hole total at 10-under 566 that saw it enter the final round on top.
Aaryanna Morris (76-69-74) provided a strong boost to the team score in the second round with a three-under 69 that included five made birdies, while Annika Cruz (72-75-72) was one of four golfers to record an eagle or better with her eagle on four in the opening round. Tsara Ralamboarison (73-72-75) finished second on the team in made birdies with eight, while Shayna Lu rounds out the team score with a three-round total of 224 (72-79-73)
Seattle U has claimed medalist honors or the team title in all three appearances at this event. Samantha Bruce set the now old program record low through 36 holes in route to her medalist performance at the 2021 event, while the 2015-16 Redhawks squad grabbed the team title with three golfers finishing inside the top-10.
The Redhawks will begin postseason play in nine days, traveling to Payson, Arizona, for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships from April 19-21.
