SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Seattle U men's golf wrapped up a stellar performance on Tuesday, finishing second out of 16 teams at the UC San Diego Invitational. Graduate students Nathan Cogswell recorded his highest finish of the season, taking second place overall and setting a new Seattle U low for 54 holes at 14-under 202 (68-68-66). The two-day, three round event took place at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California, on the 7,258 yards course with a par of 72.
Winning in our game can be very difficult," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "Our goal all season has been to prepare for post season play and our experience in San Diego was a step in the right direction. Shooting 30 under par is very impressive but our performance on the finishing holes paints a clear picture about how important each shot really is."
As a team, the Redhawks set records for lowest total through 36 holes (557, 19-under) and lowest total through 54 holes (834, 30-under). SU was stellar on the par four and fives, placing second in scoring and average in both categories with a three-over/4.02 in the par fours and 32-under/4.47 in the par fives. Seattle U made the third most pars (178) in the field and was the only team to have three players score under 70 in one round, doing so in the second and third round.
Cogswell was phenomenal in all facets at the UC San Diego Invitational, placing second in par four scoring (four-under) and average (3.87) and tying for second in made birdies (17). Cogswell's three-round total of 202 was one stroke better than the previous 54 hole record he set back in the 2019-20 season with a 10-under 203 at the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, California.
Fellow graduate student Jack Rahon also recorded a top-five finish, tying for fourth overall at nine-under 207 (69-69-69) for his best overall finish this season. This marks Rahon's best career 54 hole total finish and ranks tied for sixth all-time.
Both Cogswell and Rahon finished tied for second in par five scoring (nine-under) and average (4.25) and tied for fifth in par three scoring (one-under) and average (2.92).
"Huge shout out to Nathan and Jack for stepping up and playing great this week," said Chandonnet. "Their upper class leadership is very appreciated and their contributions and commitment to making those around them better will be of the utmost importance as they both have one final attempt at a National Championship."
Junior Blake Kukula (74-69-69) tied his best finish of the season, tying for 19th overall after shooting two consecutive rounds of three-under 69 over the final two rounds. Kukula played some of his best golf on the par fours, tying for fifth in scoring (two-under) and average (3.93)
Sophomore Liam Gill (70-71-73) finished two strokes behind Kukula, while freshman Ben Ragland rounds out the team score with a three-round total of 222 (73-76-73).
Seattle U looks forward to hosting the ninth annual Redhawk Invitational next week, beginning Monday with rounds one and two at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Washington.
