PROVIDING PAINT PRESENCE
Freshman Mya Moore is coming off her best game in a Redhawk uniform, logging 18 points, seven rebounds and three blocks against Eastern Washington Tuesday night, all of which are career-highs. The native of Milwaukee, Wisc, was very effective in the paint, converting on eight of her 11 field goal attempts. Since Moore has been inserted into the starting lineup, Seattle U has averaged 24 points in the paint per game.
HOWARD CAN SCORE
Peyton Howard is starting to play some of her best basketball at the right time, recording back to back 18 point performances. The guard from Spokane, Wash., had a career-best night against CSUN, setting new career-highs in points (18), rebounds (eight), steals (four) and assists (four). Howard continued that momentum against Eastern Washington, scoring 18 once more to go along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block.
BENCH IMPACT
The Redhawks' bench has provided a great scoring punch throughout nonconference, with five different players logging points in the double-digits. Junior Irena Korolenko and sophomore Julianna Walker scored in double figures against CSUN, with the former logging a career-high 19 that included five made threes and the latter finishing with 13. Korolenko has provided valuable bench points all season, logging double-digit points in three games overall. The other three to score double-digits off the bench are freshman Sheridan Liggett, Makayla Moore and Mya Moore, with Makayla Moore's 13 being the highest total of the three.
BEST THREE-POINT PERFORMANCE
Sophomore Julianna Walker recorded the WAC's best three-point performance of the season, logging six made threes against Portland State on November 17. Only Kaylee Best has made more three-pointers in one game, draining seven at Grand Canyon back in 2017. Courtney Murphy was the last Redhawk to make six, achieving the feat three times in 2019.
Walker currently leads the Redhawks in made three-pointers with 18, while shooting 42% from distance. The Tacoma, Wash., native also poured in four threes against CSUN on Dec. 10 and three threes against Oregon State on Nov. 10.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Cal Poly enters this matchup with a 3-5 record, falling to Northern Arizona in overtime, 76-79, with their most recent victory coming against San Jose State on Nov. 26 by a scoreline of 62-53. Annika Shah leads the Mustangs, averaging 11.5 points per game and finishing as the leading scorer against NAU with 20 points.
Cal Poly ranks third in the Big West Conference in three-point percentage (32) and team offensive rebounding (11.5), while holding the last spot in opponent field goal percentage (44) and team defensive rebounding (19.4). Cal Poly currently leads in the all-time series, 3-1, with Seattle U claiming the last matchup in San Luis Obispo, 72-49, back in 2019.
UC San Diego currently sits with a record of 2-5, falling 60-72, against San Diego State. Sydney Brown is the top scorer for the Tritons, averaging 14.7 per game with 15 points and nine rebounds against the Aztecs. Izzy Forsyth is also coming off a strong game against SDSU, recording 15 points, five rebounds and a block.
UC San Diego ranks first in the Big West Conference in defensive rebounding per game (27.9) and second in overall rebounding (37.6), while holding the tenth spot in points allowed per game (71.4). Seattle U currently leads in the all-time series, 5-2, with the Tritons taking the most recent matchup in Seattle, 60-44, last season. UCSD will take on California and San Jose State on Friday and Sunday before their matchup with SU.
