Louisville, Ky. - Seattle U Volleyball swept both of its matches on Friday, defeating Bellarmine (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) and IUPUI (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) in three sets to earn its third straight victory. Both matches of the Bellarmine Invitational were played at Knights Hall in Louisville, Kentucky.
"We really played our style of volleyball today," said Head Coach Michelle Cole. "Everyone showed great team support and scrambled for every ball. Ezgi is the nucleus this team rotates around and she turned in a fantastic performance today. She served aggressively, set the right people, dug the ball well and set up a ferocious block."
GAME ONE
The Redhawks started off slowly in set one, trailing 2-8, before mounting a nine-zero run. Shanice Horn started the comeback, finishing with seven kills in the first set. A few errors by the Knights helped SU secure the second set and a kill from Horn completed the three-set sweep.
Arianna Bilby was one kill and dig short of a double-double, while Horn led the team in kills with 11 and Katlyn Sipes recorded a then season-high 14 digs. Ezgi Ozkan assisted on 29 points to go along with seven digs and Merima Smajlovic was the team leader in total blocks with four, adding five kills and digs.
GAME TWO
Seattle U was in steady control of this match from the beginning, opening on an eight-three run. Three streaks of three plus points helped SU claim the first set, while a Bilby kill clinched set two and an attack error by the Jaguars earned SU its third straight win and seventh straight set.
Bilby posted her first double-double of the season with 16 kills and 10 digs, recording a hitting percentage of .424. Horn added 14 kills of her own, while Ozkan logged 32 assists, nine digs and two service aces.
On defense, the Redhawks had six players record at least one block assist with Marley Hardgrave leading the way with three. Sipes beats her season-high in consecutive games with 18 digs, while Smajlovic sets a career-high with 12.
