BEAUMONT, Texas – Seattle U women's tennis season concluded on Sunday, falling 4-0 against New Mexico State in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament title match at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center in Beaumont, Texas.
"I am really happy with how we finished the season on a high note," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "Even though we didn't get the result we wanted today, we came a long way from where we started a couple of months ago. I am excited for what is to come and can't wait for next season."
New Mexico State started the match by claiming the doubles point. Freshman Liliya Dimova and Elena Kraleva finished WAC play undefeated in doubles play, earning their seventh conseuctive victory against Chloe Gavino and Mingfang Zhu, 6-0. Junior Jade Lancaster and freshman Mireia Fehr (4-6) paired against Natsuki Nihimura and Gavi Kalaga, while senior Hannah Grossman and freshman Jade Quintana (6-7 (4-7)) fell in the tiebreaker against Miranda Bishard and Bella Nguyen.
In singles play, senior Aranza Alvarez Sanabria (0-6, 1-6) dropped her match against Nguyen, while fellow senior Jillian Rasmussen (0-6, 1-6) battled against Bishard and Dimova's (3-6, 1-6) singles win streak came to an end against Zhu. The remaining singles matches went unfinished as the Aggies already claimed the dual match victory.
The Redhawks finished the season winning four of their last six matches and made an appearance in the WAC title match for the first time in program history.
SU graduates five seniors - Aranza Alvarez Sanabria, Hannah Grossman, Jade Lancaster, Jillian Rasmussen and Alisa Sabotic. The Redhawks will return their freshman who all showed glimpses of greatness this season. Dimova and Kraleva were named to the Second Team All-WAC Doubles for their play as a pairing this season, while Fehr concluded the year on a five match win streak and won WAC Singles Athlete of the Month in September.
