DENVER, Colo. - Seattle U women's golf graduate student Keisha Lugito, senior Samantha Bruce and freshman Rivekka Jumagulova are among those honored by the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Friday as the league unveiled its 2022 postseason awards. Jumagulova was named WAC Freshman of the Year and received Second Team honors, while Lugito joins her on the Second Team and Bruce earns First Team honors.
"Awards are a byproduct of their constant effort to be the best," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "This was a special year for our program and I am so thankful that they trusted me and represented Seattle U in the best way every time they walked out on that golf course."
Jumagulova earns WAC Freshman of the Year and Second Team honors after a phenomenal season. The Almaty, Kazakhstan, native won the individual title at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational and placed in the top-10 at three more tournaments. Her performance at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational included the best low 54-hole total (211, five-under) and third lowest 18 round score (68) in program history. Jumagulova's season ranks first in scoring average (73.70), par or better rounds (10), birdies (68) and par four scoring (4.1401) in school history. The freshman added three WAC Golfers of the Week for her performances this season.
"Rivekka is an absolute rock star," said Chandonnet. "The entire group road her coattails to some pretty special victories this year. We are excited for what is to come over the next couple of years and I am thankful to the conference for these recognitions."
Bruce finished the WAC Championships as SU's top finisher, tying for fifth place with a three-round total of 220 (74-73-73). She finished the event tied for first in par five scoring (four-under) and average (4.67) as well as tied for sixth in made birdies (8). The Makati City, Philippines, native earns her second straight All-WAC honor after being named to the Second Team last season. Bruce concluded the season playing some of her best golf, finishing in the top-15 at four of the last five tournaments. Among golfers that played 27 rounds, she ranks second in scoring average (75.00), par or less rounds (7) and birdies (67) in program history.
Lugito concluded her final tournament with a one-under par 71 performance in the final round, tying for ninth overall. The Walnut, California, native finished the event tied for third in par three scoring (even) and average (3.00), claiming her third top-10 finish of the season. The fifth-year senior tied the lowest 36-hole total in a tournament with her score of six-under 138 in her third-place finish at the Aggie Invitational and earned WAC Golfer of the Week honors for her performance at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird.
The Redhawks concluded the 2021-22 season Wednesday, finishing third out of nine teams at the WAC Championships. They posted a team score of 46-over 910, with their best round of 299 coming in the final round. SU converted the second most birdies (28) and finished third in par four (4.31) and five (5.12) scoring.
