KERRVILLE, Texas - Seattle U women's golf concluded the 2021-22 season Wednesday, finishing third out of nine teams at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships. Senior Samantha Bruce was SU's top finisher, tying for fifth place with a three-round total of 220 (74-73-73). The event took place at the Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, Texas, on the 6,196 yards course with a par of 72.
"I am extremely appreciative of this group of women," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "They almost pulled out the victory and battled hard until the end, staying positive through adversity and having fun the whole time. It was great to give these women the experience of playing at a Championship level and they now know what it takes to compete here."
Claiming the team title was 2021 champions, New Mexico State, with a stroke total of 34-over, while Grand Canyon's Siripatsorn Patchana took the individual title with a stroke total of three-under. The Redhawks posted a team score of 46-over 910, with their best round of 299 coming in the final round. SU converted the second most birdies (28) and finished third in par four (4.31) and five (5.12) scoring.
Bruce finished the event tied for first in par five scoring (four-under) and average (4.67) as well as tied for sixth in made birdies (8). The native of Makati City, Philippines, finished the season playing some of her best golf, claiming four top-15 finishes in the final five tournaments.
"Samantha hit the ball well enough to win this tournament," said Chandonnet. "I am positive that next year will be a huge year for her, she is so close to breaking out and becoming one of the best players in college golf."
Graduate student Keisha Lugito (75-80-71) concluded her final SU tournament with a one-under par 71 performance in the final round, tying her for ninth overall. The Walnut, California, native finished the event tied for third in par three scoring (even) and average (3.00) and claimed her third top-10 finish of the season.
"I want to thank Keisha for all the time she spent representing our program," said Chandonnet. "She's a first class human being and her contributions to the program are irreplaceable. She left SU golf in a better place then when she arrived and went out in such a great way, birdieing 3 of last 4 holes to shoot under par."
Junior Azumi Arai (74-78-75) finished one stroke behind her, marking her best finish of the season at tied for 11th overall. Fellow Junior Megan Kelly (81-79-81) was the final Redhawk to play all three rounds, finishing with a total of 241. Freshman Annika Cruz and Samantha Yates make up the final player of the team score. Cruz posted a 78 in the first round, while Yates shot an 85 as a substitute. Cruz returned for the third round, shooting an 80.
