BELLEVUE - Seattle U baseball fell in a slugfest to Washington State, 6-11, Wednesday at Bannerwood Park. The teams combined for 17 runs and 25 hits in the ballgame.
After the Cougars got out to a 1-run lead in the top of the first, the Redhawks quickly responded in the bottom of the frame. Matt Boissoneault ripped a single up the middle that scored Shane Jamison and Gavin Rork, as SU now led 2-1.
Washington State tied the game in the third inning, just for the Redhawks to race ahead again after a Jamison RBI single in the bottom half. It would be the last time the Redhawks led the game, as thew Cougars went on to score seven unanswered over the next two innings.
The Redhawks would put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth to cut into the Cougars lead. After Julian Kodama and Boissoneault both reached on singles, Connor O'Brien was called upon to pinch hit. On the first pitch he saw, O'Brien sent a towering homerun over the left-center fence that cleared the scoreboard, narrowing the deficit to just three.
Washington State would shut the door on the comeback effort, adding two more in the eighth and eventually going on to win the game b a final score of 11-6. The loss dropped the Redhawks to 9-23 and ended their unbeaten streak against the Cougars at Bannerwood Park.
Next up for the Redhawks is a return to conference play when they welcome New Mexico State to town for a 3-game WAC series. The series will start on Friday, April 22 at Bannerwood Park with a first pitch set for 3:00 PM between the Redhawks and Aggies.
