PHOENIX, Ariz. - Seattle U women's tennis defeated Dixie State 5-2 on Thursday, clinching a berth to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament next week in Beaumont, Texas. The WAC dual match was played at the GCU Tennis Facility in Phoenix, Arizona.
"We were ready for a battle today and delivered big time," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "I am very proud of our team and how hard they have worked all season. Everyone is in great spirits and we look forward to playing New Mexico State tomorrow."
The victory improves the Redhawks to 2-1 in WAC play, securing them at least the third seed in the west division.
Seattle U started the match by sweeping the doubles point. Senior Aranza Alvarez Sanabria and freshman Jade Quintana (6-1) earned the first victory over Jane Dorny and Sabrina Longson, while junior Jade Lancaster and freshman Mireia Fehr (6-3) clinched the doubles point against Alexandra Hildreth and Ya-Chi Hsu in their first time paired together. Freshman Liliya Dimova and Elena Kraleva (6-3) finished off the doubles sweep with their third consecutive victory against Juliana Honczaruk and Rachel Mellor.
In singles play, the Redhawks took four of the six matchups. Dimova's match was the first to finish, defeating Hsu in identical sets of 6-1, 6-1, for her second consecutive victory. Lancaster (6-4, 6-1) would make it 3-0 with her second consecutive victory against Longson, while Fehr claimed the dual match victory against Hildreth 6-1, 7-5, on court one. Quintana (7-5, 6-1) would claim the last Redhawk victory of the evening, earning her fourth win of the season against Honczaruk. Senior Jillian Rasmussen (6-7, 1-6) and Alvarez Sanabria (3-6, 2-6) would round out the rest of the singles matches, falling to Angelina Amelkina and Mellor, respectively.
Seattle U will conclude the WAC regular season on Friday with a netural site match against New Mexico State at the GCU Tennis Facility, starting at 2 p.m.
