SEATTLE - The regular season kicks off this week as the Seattle U Redhawks host two home games to start the 2021-22 campaign. Seattle U will face off with Northwest in the season opener, set for Tuesday, November 9 at 6:00 pm PT. The Redhawks will also host UC San Diego this week, with that game set for Saturday, November 13 at 2:00 pm PT.

Seatle U is 11-4 all-time against Northwest but have never faced U San Diego in Division I play. The Redhawks are 1-1 in their last two season openers, both at home, with their last win over Saint Martin's to begin the 2019-20 season. Last season, the Redhawks went 7-5 at home, including a 106-39 win over Northwest.

All attendees over age of 12 at Seattle U home games this year will be required to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result. Additional information is available online.

FOLLOW THE REDHAWKS

BACK TO THE WAC

The Redhawks will have the WAC Defensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-WAC performer back this year in Bree Calhoun and McKenzi Williams. This is the first time the Redhawks have had two WAC postseason honorees returning since 2017-18, when 2016-17 WAC Freshman of the Year Kamira Sanders and First Team All-WAC honoree Alexis Montgomery were back.

BREE-FENSE

Bree Calhoun is the first WAC Defensive Player of the Year to return the next season since Jaleesa Ross of Fresno State did so after earning the 2009-10 honor. Calhoun, Ross, and Delena Carter of Nevada are the only players to earn WAC Defensive Player of the Year and return the next season. Carter is the only player ever to earn the award multiple times, doing so in 2007-08 and 2008-09. The Redhawks have earned the award each of the last two years after Kamira Sanders did so in 2019-20: Nevada is the only other school to earn back-to-back WAC DPOY awards.

SCORING: IT'S GOOD

McKenzi Williams finished third in the WAC in scoring last year and is the conference's leading returning scorer, averaging 15.2 PPG in 2020-21. Williams is one of just five Redhawks to average 15+ PPG since Seattle U returned to Division I play. Williams holds the Division I Seattle U record for single-game points as well, putting up 36 against Idaho last season.

IT'S A BLOCK PARTY

The Redhawks recorded 97 blocks last season, coming just three blocks away from the fourth 100+ block season in program history. The 97 blocks were still the most by the Redhawks since 1986-87, when they had a program-record 119. The 3.9 blocks per game were the second-most in the WAC, behind only California Baptist. Both Georgia Kehoe and Hailey Vice-Neat averaged a block per game, the first time Seattle U has had multiple players averaging 1.0 BPG in the Division I era.

FROM DOWN(UNDER)TOWN

Courtney Murphy enters the 2021-22 campaign with 133 career made three-pointers, the sixth-most in Seattle U history. Murphy needs just three more three-pointers to move into a tie with Mandy Matzke for fourth. With 62 three-pointers this season, Murphy would tie Kaylee Best for the Seattle U Division I record. Murphy has averaged 2.46 threes per game in her career, putting her on a pace for 71 threes this season.

TWICE THE NAMES, TWICE THE DEFENSIVE STATS

Hailey Vice-Neat averaged over a steal and a block per game last year. Vice-Neat was one of just three players in the WAC to reach those marks, joining her teammate Georgia Kehoe and Caitlyn Harper of California Baptist. 12 times in 22 games Vice-Neat recorded multiple steals or blocks, with two games recording at least five combined steals and blocks. Vice-Neat and Kehoe joined Taelor Ross as the only Redhawks to average at least a block and a steal in the same season in the Division I era. Ross did so in both 2014-15 and 2015-16.

REBOUNDS!

Chinwe Ezeonu is closing in on 300 career rebounds, needing just 11 more. She has recorded 140+ rebounds in each of her two years at Seattle U, including a career-best 149 last year. Ezeonu tied for the team lead in rebounds last year with Georgia Kehoe. If either of them were to lead the team in rebounds this year, they would be the sixth Redhawk to do so in back-to-back years, joining Alexis Montgomery, Taelor Ross, Kacie Sowell, and Laina Sobczak.
