SEATTLE – Seattle University men's soccer rallied to beat Dartmouth, 3-2 in overtime, on Sunday afternoon. James Morris scored in the 93rd minute to lift SU to its second OT win of the week in the non-conference contest at Championship Field.
"I liked our team's response, in overtime especially," said SU Coach Pete Fewing. "We can't keep digging ourselves in a hole, but now that's two overtime wins. I'm pleased that they have confidence in those situations that they'll find a way to win."
Hal Uderitz equalized in the 88th minute to force overtime. SU quickly gained possession in the extra session and never let the Big Green get the ball back. The Redhawks attacked and cycled the ball around with Campbell Strong moving the ball back to Sam Tessler near midfield. He swung it to Mo Mohamed, who made a move and sent a pass ahead to Noe Meza. Meza crossed a ball into the box, where Morris flicked on a header that found the back of the net for the golden goal.
The defenses controlled the action to start, as each backline cleared away any serious threats in the opening moments.
In the 23rd minute, the Redhawks claimed a corner kick. Declan McGlynn served in a ball to the back post, where Alex Acton-Petronotis leapt and connected on a looping header. The shot arced over the Big Green goalkeeper and dropped into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage that SU carried into halftime.
The visitors evened the score in the 54th minute, capitalizing on an SU turnover to make it 1-all. Dartmouth got the better of the middle portion of the frame and in the 70th minute, the Big Green earned a corner kick and converted with a header to go up, 2-1.
SU tilted the field in its direction after that, piling up corner kicks and free kicks down the stretch. McGlynn's corner kick late in regulation found the foot of Uderitz, who smashed a shot into the top of the net to level the contest. Morris followed with the winner in OT.
The Redhawks outshot Dartmouth, 18-10, and posted 14 corner kicks.
Seattle U next travels to Portland on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
