SEATTLE – Seattle University softball won, 2-1 in nine innings, as Cherise Silvan hit a walk-off home run to top Dixie State on Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks completed a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) weekend sweep at Logan Field.
DSU loaded the bases with one out in the first, but Nance collected a pop-up and a groundout to end the threat. Nance followed with a 1-2-3 second and in the third, Silvan ran down a deep flyball to left and then threw to Lily Garcia, who relayed to Madison Cathcart to double off the Blazer runner and close the frame.
In the bottom of the third, Alyson Matriotti singled to right and Olivia Viggiano was hit by a pitch. Ally Choate came through with an RBI single down the rightfield line, scoring Matriotti for a 1-0 margin.
The visitors tied the game in the top of the fourth. The game remained even at 1 as DSU came to bat in the sixth. After a double and a walk, SU (24-18, 11-4 WAC) went to Shi Smith in relief. She promptly struck out the side to escape the jam and bring the Redhawks back to the plate.
Cathcart singled in the sixth and then Silvan walked and Taylor DeDen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. DSU got out of the situation with a flyball to center.
Neither team scored in the seventh or eighth frames, as Smith locked up the DSU attack. She struck out two in the ninth to bring up Silvan. The senior took a ball and then hammered the next pitch in to the netting above the wall in rightfield, sending the Redhawks pouring onto the field in celebration.
Smith struck out seven in four scoreless innings of relief to get the win. Nance went five frames, giving up one run and six hits.
Seattle U has won in walk-off fashion on senior days in three straight seasons (2018, 2019, 2021).
The Redhawks travel to Grand Canyon for their final WAC series of the season next weekend.
