LAS VEGAS – Seattle University softball beat Idaho State, 6-1, to close action at the Boyd Gaming Classic on Sunday morning. Mekenzie Madokoro recorded three hits to lead the SU offense to victory.

Shi Smith hurled a complete game, containing the Bengal offense to just four hits in the win. Olivia Viggiano tripled to lead off the first and then Madison Cathcart doubled her in for a quick 1-0 lead. Cathcart now has 54 career doubles, tied for third-most in WAC history. She needs three more to tie the WAC all-time record.

Smith struck out a pair on her way to a 1-2-3 second frame. She was perfect in the third as well, but ISU came up with a run in the fourth to get on the board.

Stephanie Merwin led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. Madokoro followed with a base hit to center and then Brooke Milder reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases. Viggiano then reached on an error that resulted in two runs scoring for a 3-1 advantage.

After another 1-2-3 inning by Smith, the Redhawks looked to pull away in the fifth. With one out, Thompson was hit by a pitch. Hannah Sasaki pinch-ran and promptly stole second. Cherise Silvan singled to left and hustled into second when the throw went to third base. Madokoro then doubled to left to drive in two runs and Milder lined a two-bagger to bring in another run for a 6-1 margin.

Thompson cut down a would-be-base-stealer to end the sixth and then Smith handled the seventh to close out the contest.

Smith struck out four and walked nine in seven innings of work. Madokoro went 3-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Milder posted two hits, including the RBI double.

The Redhawks will play at Washington next weekend. SU will take on Portland State twice and UW twice at Husky Softball Stadium.
