YAKIMA, Wash. – Seattle University men's soccer beat Gonzaga, 3-1, in an exhibition match on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Jesse Ortiz, junior Habib Barry, and senior Noe Meza each scored as the Redhawks kicked off the 2021 season.
"It was great to play a different team today," said SU Coach Pete Fewing. "Gonzaga is a good team. We had a chance to play 19 players today, including some minutes for our newcomers."
Gonzaga scored early to gain a 1-0 advantage. Seattle U answered with an Ortiz goal that sophomore James Morris set up. A Zag foul gave SU a free kick chance and Ortiz's ball found Barry for the go-ahead score. Meza then finished a terrific buildup with a goal, assisted by redshirt freshman Rory King.
Akili Kasim made three saves and Zach Nelson tallied one stop in goal.
SU will play an exhibition at Seattle Pacific on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at SPU.
