BELLEVUE, Wash. — In a late midweek addition to the schedule, Seattle U baseball downed Saint Martin's, 10-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
Seattle U snapped a three-game skid, improving to 7-9 on the year, while seven Redhawks comprised for 10 hits. Julian Kodama led the way with a 3-for-4 day, scoring twice and driving in a run during the fifth and seventh innings.
The Redhawks opened the scoring with a five-run second. Grant Heiser (1-3) drove in Nolan Jekich (1-1) for the opening run, before Kodama scored on a Trevor Antonson (0-3) RBI. Then with bases loaded, Gavin Rork (1-4) then doubled down the right field line to plate Antonson and Wells, before later scoring a double from Austin Lively.
Saint Martin's scored once in fourth on a wild pitch, before doubling its run total with a RBI-single in the sixth, to trail 6-2.
In the seventh, Dylan Gerard (0-1) drew a lead walk in a pinch appearance, before shortly finding himself at third. He then added to the Seattle U margin on a single by Kodama. Two batters later, Chase Wells (1-3) brought Kodama to extend the lead to 8-2, while moving Matt Boissoneault (1-1) to third after reaching on single.
With two runners on, Heiser was then plunked to load the bases. In the ensuing at-bat, Antonson was credited with bringing in Wells and Boissoneault for the score, pushing the Redhawk advantage to 10-2.
In spite of platoon of arms for the Redhawks starter Jarrod Billig (3-2) was credited with his third-consecutive victory. Billig tossed three innings, retiring eight-of-10 batters faced recorded with three strikeouts and one hit against.
Josh Thompson (1.0 IP), Max Cuenca (2.0 IP), Alex Jemal (2.0 IP) and Brandon Jenkins (1.0 IP) then made relief appearances. Jemal and Jenkins were perfect in their brief performances, combining for five of the 12 strikeouts on the day by Redhawk pitchers.
The Redhawks are slated to open their WAC schedule next weekend against UTRGV in a three-game set at Bannerwood Park.
