SAN DIEGO, California — Quiet bats tripped up the Redhawks on Saturday as Seattle U fell 6-2 to San Diego in the second game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Classic.
The Redhawks (2-4) tallied just three hits on the day including a solo home run by Justin Mazzone (1-3) in the fourth. The blast by Mazzone was the first of the season and ninth of his career.
The other Redhawk run was scored in the seventh as Julian Kodama (1-3) scored on a wild pitch, after reaching on a lead off single before Drake Maningo (1-3) moved him to third.
Seattle U starter Ethan Christianson (1-1) was strong early recording back-to-back 1-2-3 innings during opening two frames. The Toreros however got to Christianson in the third, breaking up a scoreless tie with four-run frame on five hits.
The lefty worked two more innings on the evening, retiring the USD side in the fourth, exiting after the fifth trailing 5-1. Christianson was inevitably issued the loss, with five runs against on seven hits, while striking out a season-best six batters.
Alex Jemal then tossed the next two innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts. He then made way for Marvcus Guarin who went three-up, three-down in the eighth.
The Redhawks will close out the Tony Gwynn Legacy Classic, tomorrow when they take on Southern Illinois. First pitch from Fowler Park is slated for 10 am.
