ABOUT THE SERIES VS UTAH VALLEY
Seattle U and Utah Valley are meeting for the 19th time, with the teams tied 9-9 in the all-time series. The teams have split the home-and-home series during the past two season, each winning on their home court. On Jan. 12 of this season, Utah Valley clinched an 88-78 win over the Redhawks in Orem. The game was a tale of two halves as Seattle U led 50-37 at the half, but struggled to find its mark in the second frame as was outscored 51-28. Morgan Means had 20 points in the game while Myles Carter, Delante Jones and Terrell Brown had 16 apiece. The Redhawks won the first meeting of 2017-18, a 55-54 final on Homecoming at KeyArena on February 3. Aaron Menzies had 15 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high six blocks in the win, while Richaud Gittens hit the go-ahead free throws with 16 ticks on the clock. LAST TIME OUT
The Redhawks won their second straight at home on Saturday, topping Chicago State, 77-57. Terrell Brown dropped 20 points with four rebounds and four assists, Morgan Means put up 12 of his own with five assists and Mattia Da Campo and Delante Jones each chipped in 10. Following a back-and-forth first half that saw the Redhawks eventually take a 33-27 lead into the break, Seattle U opened things up in the second half. A 26-15 advantage on the boards, including 13 offensive rebounds for 15 second-chance points helped the Redhawks pull away. A 7-0 spurt midway through the frame helped Seattle U open up a 14-point, 51-37 advantage with 9:13 to play. After a Delshon Strickland jumper made it 55-43 Redhawks, the home team reeled off a 22-6 run that put the game away. Aggressive defensive pressure from the visitors worked in Seattle U's favor as the Redhawks went 12-13 from the free-throw line in the second half and 13-16 on the day. SU has shot 80 percent from the charity stripe the past two games. Chicago State took advantage of Redhawk turnovers and incomplete play execution to jump out to a 10-4 lead five minutes into the first half. The Cougars utilized sharp mid-range shooting to bypass the size of Myles Carter and Da Campo in the post. Seattle U gained its first lead of the night through Matej Kavas. Kavas, who had been sidelined most of the WAC campaign due to injury, nailed back-to-back triples to make it a 20-16 Redhawk advantage at the 9:22 mark in the first half. On the opposite side of the court, the visitors had no answer for the physicality of Carter and Da Campo under the hoop. Da Campo went on a personal 4-0 spurt to open the scoring for the Redhawks while Carter added six of his own, going 3-5 from the field for his efforts and keeping SU in the game. The Redhawks got hot in the mid-range as well, with Riley Grigsby and Brown muscling their way to the rack, combining for 17 points off 72 percent paired shooting in the first. A personal 8-0 run by Brown aided in closing out the half for SU. With the Redhawk offense coming from the hands of Brown, the redshirt sophomore used his speed off the dribble to create separation from his man and get open shots. The home side held a 33-27 advantage at the halftime break. SU tallied 15 offensive boards on the day compared to the Cougars' eight. The Redhawks used their rebounds with purpose, finishing with 18 second-chance points.?
