ABOUT THE SERIES VS KANSAS CITY
This will mark the 13th meeting in program history between Seattle U and Kansas City, with the Roos holding a 7-5 series edge. Kansas City won this season’s first meeting, 63-54, on its home court. Terrell Brown led the Redhawks with 22 points while Myles Carter added 14 in the game. The teams split the home-and-home series in 2017-18, each winning on their home court. The Redhawks were victorious in the season’s first meeting, earning a 77-75 win on Jan. 13 at KeyArena. Matej Kavas led Seattle U with 22 points in the win while Jordan Hill added 15 points. Richuad Gittens and Josh Hearlihy chipped in 13 points apiece. Hill sank two free throws with three seconds remaining to snap a 75-75 tie and a potential game-winner rimmed out for the Roos. In Kansas City on Feb. 8, 2018, Seattle U trailed 41-29 at the half and could not recover in the second, falling 74-67. Hill led four Redhawks in double-figures with 16 points. Kansas City swept the home-and-home series in 2016-17 by scores of 84-68 and 102-72.

LAST TIME OUT
The Redhawks led New Mexico State for nearly 32 minutes, seeking an upset of the WAC leader on its home court last Saturday. But the lead would slip away late against a side that has lost just four conference games at home in the past decade and the Aggies would prevail, 59-53. Terrell Brown led all scorers with 25 points, one shy of his career high. The redshirt sophomore went 8-17 from the field, including 2-3 from three, and 7-8 from the charity stripe. He also added five rebounds and four assists on the night. No other Redhawk would reach double figures as Riley Grigsby came off the bench to chip in six. Myles Carter, who battled foul trouble all night, finished with four points in 15 minutes. Mattia Da Campo and Morgan Means, who would also both foul out late in the game, had five points apiece. “Our guys played their hearts out in a tough environment,” said Head Coach Jim Hayford. “We put together a great effort and this was a tough outcome. New Mexico State is a talented team with excellent coaching.” Seattle U came out of the gates with a renewed focus, clamping down on defense to limit the Aggies. NM State would score the game’s first point on a free throw two minutes in, but the Redhawks would score the next six points on a Carter layup, Da Campo three and Brown free throw. The Redhawks would lead 11-3 just inside the under 12 media timeout, and eventually use a 10-1 run to open up a 21-8 advantage with 7:02 left in the frame. The Aggies would cut the spread down to five, 23-18, just inside two minutes, but Brown would hit back-to-back triples to help Seattle U take a 29-22 lead into the break. A slow offensive start to the second half for both teams saw only a single free throw made in the opening two minutes. Means knocked down a three at the 7:45 mark to push Seattle U’s lead to nine, 32-23. Back-to-back Aggie triples trimming the spread to five, but the Redhawks would answer with six straight points for a 40-29 advantage with 14:45 to go. But the Redhawks’ shortened bench, along with foul trouble, saw the Aggies work their way back once again. A 12-2 run brought the home team within one, 42-41, at the 8:30 mark. A pair of free throws by NMSU’s Terrell Brown tied the game, 47-47. Anand Hundal briefly put the lead back in the Redhawks’ hands with a putback layup. But Clayton Henry’s three pointer at the 5:26 mark gave the Aggies their first lead, 50-49, since two minutes into the game. The Redhawks would manage just four points after that as the Aggies held on down the stretch.

INJURY AND ILLNESS BUG
Injury and illness has swept through the Redhawk squad to start 2019, leaving the team looking a bit different to start WAC play. Matej Kavas and Delante Jones, two of the teams top scorers through non-conference action, have missed eight and five games, respectively, due to leg injuries. The Redhawks also went without Aaron Nettles and Riley Grigsby for three games as Nettles is nursing a nagging leg injury and Grigsby suffered a sprained ankle. A stomach flu also swept through the team during January and early February.

IMPACT BY THE NUMBERS
While the Redhawks went 12-3 during non-conference play, Myles Carter, Morgan Means, Terrell Brown, Matej Kavas, Delante Jones, Aaron Nettles and Riley Grigsby played 90% of the team’s total court minutes. Since the start of WAC play, those same seven players have accounted for just 72.5% of the team’s total court minutes.

REDHAWK RUNDOWN

  • Terrell Brown has had 20+ point outings in three of the Redhawks’ last four outings. He scored 22 at Kansas City on Jan. 26, followed with a 24-point effort on Feb. 2 versus California Baptist, then also added a game-high 25 points at New Mexico State on Feb. 16. Brown’s season-high is 26 points, set on Nov.. 28 versus Northwest.
  • Seattle U had an unusual mid-conference, 12-day stretch without a game due to the Redhawks’ Feb. 9 meeting with Utah Valley getting postponed due to extreme inclement weather in Seattle. The game was rescheduled for Feb. 26.
  • The schedule change means the Redhawks ended up playing seven of their first 10 WAC games on the road, then host five of the final six games of the year at the Redhawk Center.
  • Myles Carter tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds on Feb. 24 at Chicago State marking his second straight game with a double-double and his WAC-leading ninth of the season. The nine double-doubles also ranks 46th in the nation.
  • Myles Carter has been solid from the free-throw line during WAC play, hitting 70.0 percent from the stripe (35-50) over the eight games. That mark is well above his season average of 60.0 percent. The big man has twice drained 10 free throws, including a 10-14 performance on Jan. 12 at Utah Valley and a 10-11 night on Jan. 19 versus UTRGV.
  • Seattle U ranks first in the WAC in FG percentage defense (40.9), blocks (3.7 per game) and 3-pt FG percentage (38.5), and  third in 3-pt FG percentage defense (33.7).
  • With five players averaging double-figures, four rank in the WAC’s top-20 for scoring as Myles Carter is fifth (14.4 ppg), Morgan Means is eighth (13.2 ppg), Delante Jones is 10th (12.8 ppg) and Terrell Brown is 11th (12.7 ppg).
  • Brown also ranks third in assists (4.6 per game), sixth in rebounds (6.8 per game) and fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.9).
  • Carter ranks second in rebounds (8.0), sixth in FG% (51.9%) and first in blocks (2.0).
  • Means ranks first in minutes played (34.6 per game) and fourth in free-throw percentage (82.8, 82-99).
