ABOUT THE SERIES VS UTRGV
Seattle U and UTRGV, formerly known as Texas Pan American, have 13 previous meetings with the Redhawks holding a 10-3 edge in the series. This marks the second meeting of the 2018-19 season as UTRGV won the first, 67-62, in the Redhawk Center on Jan. 19. Seattle U earned a three-game sweep during the 2017-18 season, including a 79-76 overtime win for Seattle U in Edinburg, Texas, on Jan. 20. The teams met in Seattle on Feb. 15, 2018, when the Redhawks ran away with an 85-68 victory. Seattle U went on to earn a historic 20th win with a 77-60 final against the Vaqueros in the first round of the WAC Tournament. The Redhawks swept the home-and-home series in 2016-17 as well, including a 96-84 victory at KeyArena on Jan. 28, 2017 and an 86-77 victory in Edinburg on Feb. 23, 2017.
LAST TIME OUT
The Redhawks let a first-half lead slip against California Baptist, falling 75-64 on Feb. 2 at the Redhawk Center. Terrell Brown provided consistent scoring for Seattle U, pouring in a game-high 24 points. Mattia Da Campo, who played a season-high 38 minutes, finished with a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double, the first of his career. Myles Carter added 12 points of his own with five boards. “We didn’t lose, California Baptist won the game,” said Head Coach Jim Hayford. “They came out and played really well. They’ve been on the road since Tuesday and they came here and played with composure.” The Redhawks got going strong with hot shooting from Anand Hundal and Brown. The pair hit three triples in the opening five minutes to give the home side some early breathing room. Seattle U went 5-6 from the field in this stretch and establishing a 13-6 lead for their efforts. With Hundal and Carter in the starting lineup combined with the size and defensive ability of Da Campo, Seattle U was able to space the court well, allowing the guards to find open shots and implement quick ball movement. Though the size of CBU’s Dejon Davis and Mike Henn kept the usually dominant Carter occupied in the paint, the Redhawks used three-point shooting to their advantage, hitting 54 percent off shots from Hundal, Brown, Da Campo, and Ian Burke. Carter added six points in the opening frame. The Lancers used a 12-3 spurt late in the first to cut the gap and eventually take the lead 23-24 off of good shooting in heavy traffic. The run proved to be vital with SU up only 35-33 going into the halftime break. Brown opened the new frame on a personal 7-3 run to stop an energetic CBU start and keep the Lancer advantage to just 40-42. Brown dropped 15 of his game-leading 24 points in the second half. CBU’s rim protection was pivotal in the visitor’s putting their stamp on the game. Defense in the paint swiftly turned to points in transition from outlet passes to open up a 11-2 run in the latter half of the second frame to make it a 57-46 game in favor of the Lancers. “They played cohesively,” Hayford said. “Credit them for the win.” Seattle U couldn’t find the scoring touch from the half prior, going just 34 percent from the field and 58 percent from the free-throw line. CBU went 11-12 from the stripe total, hitting five of six in the closing minute.
INJURY AND ILLNESS BUG
Injury and illness has swept through the Redhawk squad to start 2019, leaving the team looking a bit different to start WAC play. Matej Kavas and Delante Jones, two of the teams top scorers through non-conference action, have missed six and three games, respectively, due to leg injuries. The Redhawks have also gone without Aaron Nettles and Riley Grigsby in the last three games as Nettles is nursing a nagging leg injury and Grigsby suffered a sprained ankle. A stomach flu also swept through the team during January and early February.
IMPACT BY THE NUMBERS
While the Redhawks went 12-3 during non-conference play, Myles Carter, Morgan Means, Terrell Brown, Matej Kavas, Delante Jones, Aaron Nettles and Riley Grigsby played 90% of the team’s total court minutes, while also accounting for 84 of 85 total court opportunities. Since the start of WAC play, those same seven players have accounted for just 75% of the team’s total court minutes, and just 30 of 56 total opportunities.
REDHAWK RUNDOWN
- Seattle U last took to the court on Feb. 2 in a home game against California Baptist. The 12-day stretch without a game was due to the Redhawks’ Feb. 9 meeting with Utah Valley getting postponed due to extreme inclement weather in Seattle. The game was rescheduled for Feb. 26.
- The schedule change means the Redhawks will end up playing seven of their first 10 WAC games on the road, then host five of the final six games of the year at the Redhawk Center.
- Terrell Brown scored a game-high 24 points on Feb. 2 versus California Baptist, two shy of his season-high of 26 scored on Nov. 28 versus Northwest.
- Myles Carter tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds on Feb. 24 at Chicago State marking his second straight game with a double-double and his WAC-leading ninth of the season. The nine double-doubles also ranks 38th in the nation.
- Myles Carter has been superb from the free-throw line during WAC play, hitting 71.4 percent from the stripe (30-42) over the eight games. That mark is well above his season average of 59.8 percent. The big man has twice drained 10 free throws, including a 10-14 performance on Jan. 12 at Utah Valley and a 10-11 night on Jan. 19 versus UTRGV.
- Seattle U ranks first in the WAC in FG percentage defense (41.1), blocks (3.9 per game) and 3-pt FG percentage (39.5), third in 3-pt FG percentage defense (34.4) and FG percentage (45.4).
- With five players averaging double-figures, four rank in the WAC’s top-20 for scoring as Myles Carter is fifth (14.8 ppg), Morgan Means is eighth (13.9 ppg), Delante Jones is 10th (12.8 ppg) and Terrell Brown is 13th (12.3 ppg).
- Brown also ranks third in assists (4.5 per game), sixth in rebounds (6.7 per game) and third in assist/turnover ratio (2.0).
- Carter ranks second in rebounds (8.3), fourth in FG% (52.2%) and first in blocks (2.2).
