STARTING STRONG
Seattle U has opened the season with a 9-3 record through 12 games, matching the best start to a season in 50 years. The last time a Seattle U team (of any division) started the season 9-3 was 1968-69. That Seattle U team would improve to 10-3 in their 13th game of the season – a 79-54 win at Portland. That year also marked the last time that Seattle U advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament. Seattle U went 19-8 that season, eventually falling 75-73 to Weber State in the NCAA First Round.

ABOUT THE SERIES VS PORTLAND
While the series dates back to the 1940s, Seattle U and Portland have a storied history as Pacific Northwest rivals. Seattle U holds a 73-31 all-time record over the Pilots. The teams have four meetings in the Redhawks’ modern day Division I era. Portland won the first three meetings, the last being on Feb. 5, 2011 – a 71-55 win for the Pilots at KeyArena. Last year, Seattle U notched its 73rd all-time win over the Pilots in an 89-76 victory on Dec. 16 at KeyArena. The Redhawks shot better than 60 percent in the second half and poured in a season-high 16 three-pointers in the game. Jordan Hill led four players in double figures with 23 points. Matej Kavas added 18.

LAST TIME OUT
The Redhawks used a 22-4 run to erase a 20-point deficit and pull within two with two minutes to play t Washington on Dec. 9. But in similar fashion to the match-up between the two teams one year ago, a late Redhawk turnover and free-throw shooting by the Huskies led SU to a 70-62 defeat. Morgan Means led the Seattle U charge late in the second half on his way to finishing with a game-high 21 points. Joining Means in double figures was Myles Carter with 15 points and Delante Jones with 10. Terrell Brown finished with nine assists and Carter and Matej Kavas had seven rebounds apiece, but the Redhawks were out-rebounded 40-29.

REDHAWK RUNDOWN

  • Matej Kavas drained six triples on Dec. 6 against Omaha as part of a 26-point performance. The six threes was one short of his single-game record of seven, set on Nov. 18, 2017 against Detroit Mercy. After hitting just one three in each of the first three games of this season, Kavas has begun to catch fire in recent outings. He has three or more triples in five of the last seven games and has shot .500 or better from deep in four of those games. His 2.5 threes per game ranks fourth in the WAC while his 30 total threes ranks second in the conference.
  • Morgan Means continues to dazzle during his junior campaign. The Compton, Calif., native leads the Redhawks in scoring at 16.0 ppg, which also ranks third best in the WAC. Through 12 games this season, he has four 20+ point games while shooting 44.9% from the field and 46.0% from three. As a sophomore, Means averaged 8.6 ppg while shooting 39.6% from the field and 28.2% from three. His free-throw percentage and rebounding average have also increased this season.
  • Junior guard Terrell Brown has flirted with a triple-double twice this season. On Nov. 23 versus Denver, the Seattle native finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. On Nov. 28, he collected 26 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. He averages 10.6 points per game, leads the team with 5.9 assists per game, which also ranks second in the WAC, and, at just 6-1, is second on the team with 7.0 rebounds per game.
  • Myles Carter has 34 blocks through 12 games, the fifth most among all DI players in games played through Dec. 15. The redshirt junior also ranks ninth nationally at 2.8 blocks per game. He is well on his way to breaking the Seattle U program record for single-season blocks (79), set just last year by Aaron Menzies.
  • Seattle U had a six-game win streak snapped at Washington on Dec. 9. The six-game streak was the first of such a length since a stretch of five wins from Jan. 23, 2016-Feb. 6, 2016.
  • Seattle U ranks first in the WAC in scoring margin (+11.9), FG percentage defense (39.1) and blocks per game (4.7), and second in scoring (81.8 ppg), FG percentage (48.5) and 3-pt FG percentage (39.3).
  • With five players averaging double-figures, all five rank in the WAC’s top-20 for scoring. Morgan Means ranks third (16.0 ppg), Matej Kavas s sixth (14.7 ppg) Myles Carter is ninth (14.1 ppg), Delante Jones is 13th (12.7 ppg) and Terrell Brown is tied for 20th (10.6 ppg).
  • Brown ranks also second in assists (5.9 per game) and fifth in rebounds (7.0 per game). Carter ranks third in rebounds (7.8), third in FG% (58.0%) and first in blocks (2.9).
  • The Redhawks play a 19-game home schedule in 2018-19, and host 22 total contests as the schedule includes a three-team, six-game tournament. The Redhawk Center, located on the Seattle U campus, will serve as the primary venue for the 2018-19 season due to the renovation and shutdown of KeyArena, scheduled to take place in 2019 and 2020. Seattle U is excited to partner with the Oak View Group and return to the newly-renovated $700 million Seattle Center Arena in 2020-21.
  • Seattle U has compiled a 228-145 (.611) record in North Court, including a 15-game winning streak that began Nov. 5, 2008 with a perfect 10-0 mark during the 2008-09 season. In 2017-18, the Redhawks went 9-1 at the Redhawk Center and so far in 2018-19, the Redhawks are 6-1.
