LIVE SCORING | CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – (April 22) The Seattle University men’s golf team is set to compete in the three-round Western Athletic Conference championship at the Prairie Dunes Golf Course from Monday through Wednesday.
After a league-wide vote by the coaches, the defending WAC champion Redhawks were picked to finish in sixth place ahead of Chicago State. Receiving all six first-place votes was Grand Canyon, who is in its first year of NCAA postseason eligibility. New Mexico State was picked to finish second and UMKC third. UTRGV and Utah Valley are tied for fourth place. Despite the low ranking, Seattle U head coach Marc Chandonnet looks to the championship with optimism.
“Our guys have shown great resolve this year through what I consider a schedule that was very difficult at times,” Chandonnet said. “The golf courses we competed on this year were extremely demanding and they tested every facet of our game. Through those experiences they’ve continued to work hard, stay positive and believe in themselves. Yes it’s true our rankings slipped and our scoring averages aren’t where we’d like them to be but we haven’t ever lost faith in who we are as players and we believe we’ve got what it takes to compete this week.”
Joe Harvie goes into the championship as the Redhawks leader with a 73.39 strokes per round average. He finished the regular season with three top-5 finishes, and his best finish came at the Oregon Duck Invitational where he finished three-under for third place. Gabe Spach and Zack Overstreet are second and third, averaging 75.06 and 75.48 strokes per round.
“As a coach, I know our experiences this year have prepared each individual to handle everything Prairie Dunes will throw at us which promises to be a championship experience. Win, lose or draw, I’m confident my team will give Seattle U everything they have and make us proud.”
