EUGENE, Ore. – (March 27) Seattle University’s Joe Harvie finished in third place overall at the Oregon Duck Invitational Monday and Tuesday after beating many elite golfers with a three-under-par in three rounds.
The Tournament hosted close to 90 golfers from 16 different schools, but that didn’t stop Harvie. He finished ahead of three players ranked in the top 78 nationally. The only ranked player to finish ahead of Harvie was the winner Norman Xiong from the University of Oregon, who is ranked 25th in the US. Harvie shot his best round of the tournament in the first round on Monday. He was two-under par, helped by a magnificent eagle in hole 16, and followed by a birdie on the next hole. He finished with par in round two, and one-under in the last round.
“How about Joe Harvie!,” head coach Marc Chandonnet said excitedly. “We both knew this was coming, he’s a phenomenal player and he pours his heart and soul into preparing each and every week. He deserves this finish and it comes in one of the strongest fields of the year, I am proud of him and appreciate the daily efforts, the inclusion and the thoughtful approach to improving.”
The Redhawks finished 16th as a team, but Chandonnet feels confident about the progress.
“Although we are disappointed in the team’s finish we know that we are doing all the right things to continue down a path that makes us a little better every day,” he said. “As a coach, I still believe in the guys and I’m confident they’ll be ready to compete come year end.”
The Redhawks’ next test will come next week when they host the Seattle U Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay April 2 and 3.
