SEATTLE (Oct. 27) – Seattle University men’s soccer beat UNLV, 4-1, Thursday night at Championship Field. Sergio Rivas, Alex Roldan, Nathan Aune, and Julio Rubio each scored in the Western Athletic Conference match, helping the Redhawks extend their home winning streak to a nation-best 16 games.
Seattle U (11-4-2, 7-0-2 WAC) celebrated senior night with a key victory, clinching a first-round bye in the WAC Tournament with one match remaining on their regular season schedule. SU finishes the regular season with a perfect 7-0 mark at home. UNLV dropped to 6-10-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference.
"The seniors played well," said Coach Pete Fewing. "I like our team. This group of seniors has a whole lot more games left to play this season."
The teams were tied at 1 late in the first half. Sam Langston crossed a line drive into the box from the left side, where Alex Roldan headed the ball into back of the net. The score came with 1:04 left in the first half and gave SU a 2-1 edge.
The Redhawks controlled play early in the second half, earning a corner kick in the opening minutes. Jeff Rose delivered a stellar ball into the box, where Aune headed it in the upper half of the net, giving SU a 3-1 advantage in the 52nd minute.
Late in the contest, Medo Youssef pressured the Rebel defense, leading to a blast from Rubio, who finished for a 4-1 margin in the closing minutes.
The visitors got on the board first, taking control in the opening minutes. Timo Mehlich sent a corner kick towards the back post, where Spencer Jackson moved the ball toward the net and Marquis Pitt finished in heavy traffic to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.
After UNLV scored first, SU answered midway through the first half. Jeff Rose dribbled around the defense and passed a long ball ahead to Sergio Rivas, who beat the Rebel goalkeeper to even the match. Rivas’ fourth goal of the season came in the 29th minute.
Prior to the contest, the Redhawks honored their eight-man senior class-Hadden, Langston, Rose, Kyle Bjornethun, Patrick Clifford, Joseph Harris, Shane Mahvi, and Cameron Rohani. The group has helped SU win 51 games, along with two WAC Championships and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
SU plays at Air Force on the last day of the regular season on Saturday, November 5. The WAC match is slated for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
