DENVER - (Oct. 12) Seniors Brendan Westendorf and William Powell earned Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference honors by both the league’s eight head coaches and the media as the WAC office announced the 2016-17 WAC Men’s Basketball Preseason polls and All-WAC teams.
The team leader in scoring with 12.8 ppg a year ago, Westendorf was selected to both the coaches and media Preseason All-WAC First Teams. The Auburn, Wash., native shot 40 percent from the field, nearly 42 percent from three and also led SU with 4.3 assists per game in 2015-16.
Powell was named to the coaches and media Preseason All-WAC Second Teams after averaging 8.9 ppg and a team-high 6.8 rpg last year.
After going 15-17 overall and 7-7 in WAC play (good for fourth place) last season, the Redhawks were selected fourth in the Preseason Media Poll and tied for fifth in the Coaches Poll. New Mexico State was selected as the League favorite in both polls, followed by Grand Canyon and CSU Bakersfield.
The Redhawks return nine total letter winners and three starters - Westendorf, Powell and Emmanuel Chibuogwu - while also welcoming five newcomers, including one 2015-16 redshirt in Matej Kavas.
Seattle U’s season opener tips off the home and Connolly Complex slate as the Redhawks host Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
