Sophomore Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) earned a top-five finish thanks to the best round of the tournament, leading the Seattle University men’s golf team into a tie for fifth place as play concluded Tuesday at The Farms Collegiate, hosted by the University of San Diego at The Farms Golf Club.

Harvie completed the second round at one-over-par 73 thanks to a birdie on the fourth hole (his 17th hole of the round), and then he picked up his second eagle of the tournament on the par-five 18th hole to go along with three birdies against just one bogey for a final round score of 68 (-4). Harvie finished the tournament in fifth place with a three-round total of 215 (-1) as he tied for the tournament lead with the two eagles, plus he was tied for second among the 66-player field with 36 pars.

After back-to-back rounds of 78 (+6), Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) collected five birdies to overcome one bad hole for a third round score of 70 (-2), moving up 21 spots into a tie for 23rd place at 226 (+10). Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) posted scores of 78 (+6) in the second round and 76 (+4) in the third round to finish in a tie for 28th place with a cumulative score of 228 (+12).

Jamie Hall (Seattle, Wash.) shot 79 (+7) in the second round, but then improved with a third round score of 75 (+3) that featured two birdies, completing the tournament in a tie for 32nd place at 229 (+13). Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) finished in 65th place with a three-round total of 273 (+57), and Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.), playing as an individual, was able to compete Tuesday and shot 80 (+8), earning a birdie on the par-three 16th hole, his final hole of the day.

Seattle U finished the second round with a combined team score of 308 (+20), but then posted a final round score of 289 (+1) to move up into a tie for fifth place in the final standings at 898 (+34). SMU kept extending its lead as the tournament went on, eventually taking the team title by 29 strokes with a three-round total of 856 (-8), with the Mustangs’ Ryan Burgess earning medalist honors after shooting 209 (-7) in the 54-hole tournament.

The Seattle University men’s golf team will begin a stretch of three straight tournaments in the Pacific Northwest with the Bandon Dunes Championship March 6-8 in Bandon, Ore. That stretch concludes with the Redhawk Invitational April 4-5 at Chambers Bay Golf Club.
