Seattle University regrouped after Monday’s play was halted due to darkness, finishing the second round strong before posting its best score of the tournament in the third round Tuesday to end up in seventh place at the LMU Invitational Honoring Jerry Mook, hosted by Loyola Marymount University at the Reflection Bay Golf Club.
Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) posted a birdie on the 14th hole and an eagle on the 15th hole as he finished the second round with a 74 (+2), and then he earned three birdies against just three bogeys to shoot even-par 72 in the final round, moving up into a tie for 26th place in the final standings at 223 (+7).
Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) completed his second round with an 80 (+8), and then he repeated his first round performance with three birdies and three bogeys for a 72 (even), finishing in a tie for 32nd place at 225 (+9). After finishing the second round with a 77 (+5), Jamie Hall (Seattle, Wash.) picked up four birdies in the third round to shoot 75 (+3), completing the tournament in a tie for 38th place at 226 (+10).
Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) improved from a second-round 82 (+10) to his best round of the tournament, shooting 76 (+4) thanks to 14 pars and no single-hole score higher than a bogey as he finished in a tie for 62nd place at 235 (+19). Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) also showed improvement as the tournament went along, following a second round 77 (+5) with a third round score of 75 (+3) to end up in a tie for 66th place at 236 (+20).
After finishing the second round with a team score of 308 (+20), Seattle U shot 294 (+6) in the third round, the Redhawks’ best round of the week, to finish the tournament in seventh place at 902 (+38). UNLV ran away with the team title, shooting 834 (-30) to win by 28 strokes over Saint Mary’s, with the Rebels’ AJ McInerney earning medalist honors at 208 (-8) by one stroke over teammate John Oda.
Seattle University heads to The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., for The Farms Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of San Diego next Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 8-9. The teams will play 36 holes Monday, Feb. 8, starting at 8:15 a.m., followed by the third and final round Tuesday, Feb. 9, beginning at 8 a.m.
