The Seattle University men’s swim team picked up a convincing victory over South Dakota, 142.5-96.5, Friday night as part of a double-dual meet hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy at the Cadet Natatorium.

The Redhawks were able to finish ahead of the Coyotes in almost every event, starting with the 400 medley relay, when the team of Morgan Montemayor (Seattle, Wash.), Tanner Schelling (Boise, Idaho), Jack Baldoni (Applegate, Calif.), and Mitchell Crossen (Puyallup, Wash.) finished in second place with a time of 3:28.59. Austin Barnard (Mill Creek, Wash.) earned a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle in 10:16.26.

Nick Connors (Richland, Wash.) finished in a tie for second place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.50, followed by Schelling finishing second in the 50 freestyle in 21.49 seconds, just ahead of Matt Morris (Lufkin, Texas) in third place in 21.86 seconds. Ben Nussbaum (Issaquah, Wash.) finished in second place in the 200 individual medley in 1:59.82.

In the 200 butterfly, Alec Barnard (Everett, Wash.) finished second overall with a time of 1:56.14, with Matt Morris (48.90) and Crossen (49.08) going 2-3 in the 100 freestyle. Montemayor finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.67, and then Connor Webb (Hood River, Ore.) earned a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.95.

Matt Morris, Jacob Morris (Tigard, Ore.), Alec Barnard, and Will Wertz (Richland, Wash.) combined for a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:27.79. Air Force won every event as the Falcons defeated both the Redhawks, 139-85, and the Coyotes, 132-92.

“We had some good swims in this meet, with the highlight probably being Alec Barnard’s swim in the 200 butterfly. It was a strong start to the weekend, and I hope the guys can keep it going tomorrow,” Seattle U head coach Craig Nisgor said.

Seattle University (3-4) will face the same two teams in the same pool Saturday, Jan. 16, starting at 11 a.m. local time (10 a.m. Pacific time).
