Seattle University women’s tennis (1-2) battled to the finish, but ultimately fell short, 4-3, to Eastern Washington (1-1) in their opening weekend finale.

“We fell just short today to a good Eastern Washington team,” said head coach Adam Reeb. “We had some really good spots today in Kelli sweeping both her matches and Madison and Barbara playing great singles matches, but unfortunately it was not enough. We’re going to keep working on our doubles a lot as it becomes so crucial in close matches like today. We’ve got a lot of areas to keep improving, but we’ve got a great group of women. We’re looking forward to putting the work in and focusing on the process of getting better. We’re looking forward to heading to Colorado in a couple weeks as we continue our young season.”

The Eagles picked up the doubles point before Kelli Woodman (Denver, Colo.) tied the match at a point apiece. Eastern Washington would follow with three straight singles wins to lead, 4-1, and clinch the victory before Barbara Carey (Seattle, Wash.) and Madison Maloney (Idaho Falls, Idaho) earned singles victories to cut their final deficit to one.

Seattle U has a weekend off from competition before traveling to Colorado for matches at Colorado State (Jan. 22) and Air Force (Jan. 23) the following weekend. Stay tuned to GoSeattleU.com and like “Seattle University Tennis” on Facebook for the latest updates on the team.
