No. 13 Seattle University men’s soccer (16-3-0, 9-1-0 WAC) recorded their eighth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory at Utah Valley (13-5-1, 6-3-1 WAC) in the regular season finale. With their 16th win of the season and a loss by No. 3 Creighton in the BIG EAST regular season title game, the Redhawks are now tied with the Bluejays for most wins in the country.

“It was a terrific win and it was one of our most complete games,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “It was a very good win to close out the regular season with, especially against the No. 2 team in the league at their place, because they wanted to win just as badly as we did. Having clinched the regular season title before this game, we still went in to play and used our normal starting lineup. It’s not easy to stay on task like the team has lately, especially with being ranked and having a high RPI, so it’s fantastic that they’re growing up right before our very eyes. It was a good team win and now we can move forward to the conference tournament.”

David Olsen (Auburn, Wash.) scored both goals for the Redhawks, just before and after halftime, the first in the 44th minute and the second in the 55th minute. Sam Langston (Sammamish, Wash.) was credited with assisting both goals.

In the game-winner, Langston played the ball in to Olsen in the box, who headed it into the right corner of the net. With the insurance goal, Olsen scored on a one touch from Langston, netting the ball into the inside right post.

Olsen led the way with 11 of Seattle U’s 19 shots, as the Redhawks outshot the Wolverines, 19-6.

“David’s goals were timely, right before and right after the half, and both with very good service from Sam Langston,” Fewing continued. “The midfield played great – Alex Roldan and Sergio Rivas – and, again, it was a wonderful team effort. Robbie Landeros, Anthony Ayala, and Josh Greene all came off the bench and did a fantastic job.”

In goal, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) recorded his eighth shutout of the season, making two saves. Collin Partee made four saves for Utah Valley, allowing both goals in the complete game outing.

Now with 13 goals on the season, Olsen is chasing Miguel Gonzalez’s record in Seattle U’s Division I record books, scoring 15 in 2013. Haworth is one shutout shy of his own DI single season record from a season ago.

As the regular season title winners, Seattle U will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s WAC Tournament and earns a first round bye. The Redhawks will play their first game on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. versus the winner of No. 4 Houston Baptist/No. 5 CSU Bakersfield.
