“I thought David [Olsen]’s first goal had good composure, and the second was even better,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “We’ve seen him play a lot and that was a situation where he knew he had to get up in the air and get on frame. He is very strong and he intended to do that; that wasn’t a lucky goal. We created enough chances and finished our chances to earn a 3-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, they were much improved. We have to learn how to deal with that extra pressure, because we’re going to see that a lot.”
The Redhawks took an early lead in the seventh minute when Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) flicked the ball to David Olsen (Auburn, Wash.) in the middle. Just 3:03 later, Agustin Andrade (Ojai, Calif.) gave the Redhawks a 2-0 lead on a through ball to Sergio Rivas (Albuquerque, N.M.).
Olsen scored his second of the match in the 38th minute in dramatic fashion as the Bakersfield goalkeeper came out from the net. Olsen beat the Roadrunner defensive line and put the ball in the net with an impeccable bicycle kick into the goal.
Seattle U leading 3-0 at half, Bakersfield’s Julian Zamora avoided the shutout with a 54th minute goal, beating past keeper Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.).
Olsen and Zamora led each team with four shots apiece, three of Olsen’s on target, resulting in a pair of goals as SU outshot CSUB, 14-7, including 9-2 on frame.
In goal, Nicolas Clever made six saves while Haworth made one thanks in large part to the skilled Redhawk backline.
The Redhawks close the weekend at home hosting San Jose State on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. after the women’s team hosts Grand Canyon at 12 noon as part of the doubleheader.
