“I was pleased we had as many shots as we had; our shots on target – 16 of 26 total shots – was not bad,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “I was pleased to see Josh Greene get the goal; I know he stays after practice and after games for extra time even though we can’t monitor that. He came in and helped control the rest of the game. Agustin [Andrade] came in and did a great job, starting for Julio [Rubio] as well, and Michael Roberts getting two goals was fantastic. I’m happy that we’re trying to get better each game.”
Sergio Rivas (Albuquerque, N.M.) netted the first goal of the game in the 12th minute, speeding past the UMKC defensive line for the finish. Seven minutes later, Agustin Andrade (Ojai, Calif.) scored his first goal of the season on a shovel kick over the Kansas City keeper’s head off a quick pass from Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.).
Taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) built on the Seattle U lead just 1:18 into the second half, fighting the Kansas City defender for the ball. Roberts would score later in the game, in the 71st minute, beating past the keeper. Josh Greene (Hamilton, N.Z.) earned the assist on Roberts’ second goal.
Greene recorded a goal of his own eight minutes prior off a previous shot by Roberts for his first goal of the season.
UMKC’s Diego Serfaty ultimately scored less than three minutes before the end of the game, beating past the SU defensive line.
Seattle U outshot Kansas City, 26-6, including 16-2 on goal, as Roberts led the charge with nine shots.
In goal, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) made one save while Jordan Hadden (Poulsbo, Wash.) made his first career appearance. For UMKC, Henrik Regitnig made 11 saves.
SU remains home Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. to host Air Force in WAC play after playing five of their last six at Championship Field.
