“It’s the way you want to start [the season],” said head coach Pete Fewing. “What I liked was that, when we were up 4-0 at half, we came out in the second half and played a complete game. I was pleased that, playing 21 guys, we kept the level [of play] and the maturity up because it easily could’ve turned into an ugly game but they didn’t let it. We stayed on top of it and didn’t let them back in the game.”
The Redhawks were dominant offensively from the outset, drawing a corner kick in the first five minutes and taking the first two shots of the game. SU would take five of the opening seven shots of the game before taking the lead.
Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) scored what would be his first of four goals, three on penalty kicks, in the 27th minute as he drew his first PK of the game. Just 38 seconds later, David Olsen (Auburn, Wash.) scored his first goal as a Redhawk, a skillful header off a long cross from Sam Langston (Sammamish, Wash.) to put SU up, 2-0.
Three minutes later, in the 30th minute, Haddadi netted his second penalty kick before a third in the 34th minute to give Seattle U a 4-0 lead going into halftime.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Haddadi would score his fourth goal of the game, first non-PK goal, on a header off a cross from Alex Roldan (Pico Rivera, Calif.) to give Seattle U the 5-0 lead. Robbie Landeros (Santa Barbara, Calif.) would score his first goal as a Redhawk 20 minutes later off a Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) short pass to give SU the 6-0 lead, which would be the final margin of victory.
Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) made with a huge save in the 71st minute as the Aggies drew a penalty kick. Haworth would tip the ball just enough to deflect it off the left post and outside the goal to preserve the shutout.
Haworth made five saves in the complete game shutout for Seattle U. Armando Quezada started the game in goal for UC Davis before being ejected on a red card nearly 30 minutes into the game, making one save. Kris Schultz entered in relief, coming up with two saves in just over 60 minutes of action.
Overall, Seattle U outshot UC Davis, 16-6, while Haddadi (5) and Olsen (4) led the shot tally individually.
With the feat, Haddadi tied the Western Athletic Conference record for individual goals in a match, last set by the University of New Mexico’s Justin Sells in 1996.
SU is set to host Gonzaga on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 3 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the Redhawk women’s soccer team, who hosts Vanderbilt at 12 noon.
