The strength of the Seattle University men’s golf program was on display this past week at the Rope Rider Golf Course at the Suncadia Resort, as four current Redhawks finished in the top 20 at the 54-hole Washington State Men’s Amateur Championship.
Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.), the 2015 WAC Freshman of the Year, led the tournament after each of the first two rounds, shooting 69 (-2) both Tuesday and Wednesday to take a five-stroke lead after 36 holes. In Thursday’s final round, Harvie got off to a solid start, posting eagle on the par-five second hole for the second straight day, but six bogeys and two double bogeys led to a 79 (+8), slipping Harvie into second place in the final standings with a three-round total of 217 (+4).
Jamie Hall (Seattle, Wash.) finished in a tie for 12th place with a final score of 225 (+12) after rounds of 75 (+4), 72 (+1), and 78 (+7). Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) completed the tournament in a tie for 14th place, combining rounds of 77 (+6), 74 (+3), and 75 (+4) for a three-round total of 226 (+13).
Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.), on his way to the U.S. Amateur Championship in Illinois in just over a week, posted his best round of the tournament Thursday, pairing a 73 (+2) with earlier scores of 76 (+5) and 78 (+7) to finish in a tie for 16th place at 227 (+14). Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) also made the cut, saving his best round for the final circuit with a 75 (+4) to finish in a tie for 33rd place at 233 (+20).
The Seattle University men’s golf team will start the 2015-16 season at the Suncadia Resort, participating in the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington Sept. 21-22.
