The All-WAC Second Team doubles pair of Michelle Lui (Bellevue, Wash.) and Kelli Woodman (Denver, Colo.) won, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles, but the Cougars would wrap doubles play with back-to-back victories to take a 1-0 lead.
Seattle U emerged with offensive force in singles play, quickly tying the match and taking a 4-1 lead on four straight singles victories. Barbara Carey (Seattle, Wash.) retired Faith Huckabee in the No. 4 spot to tie the tally before Lui, the WAC Freshman of the Year, defeated Matea Roki in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to gain the lead for good.
Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) topped Marnie Perez-Ochoa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to increase the lead, 3-1, before Madison Maloney (Idaho Falls, Idaho) clinched the victory with a three-set match in the No. 3 spot.
Due to tournament play, the match ended with the victory clinched rather than the teams playing out the remaining points.
The Redhawks advance to the semifinals to face the overall No. 1 seed, New Mexico State, on Saturday, Apr. 25 at 9 a.m. CT/7 a.m. PT. The winners of Saturday’s semifinal matches will advance to Sunday’s championship game. Stay tuned to GoSeattleU.com and @su_athletics on Twitter for any schedule updates.
