The Seattle University track and field team used one school record and several top performances to help the collection of Washington schools defeat a team of schools from other Northwest states in the eighth annual WAR meet held at Spokane Falls Community College.
Mandie Maddux (Gresham, Ore.) broke the outdoor track and field school record in the high jump, finishing second in the event after clearing 1.65 meters (5’ 5”), 3/100ths of a meter higher than the previous mark set over five years ago. Maddux also finished 15th in the long jump with a mark of 4.56 meters (14’ 11.5”) and in the shot put with a throw of 11.25 meters (36’ 11”), plus she finished 19th in the javelin throw with a mark of 30.63 meters (100’ 6”).
Valerie Wu (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) won the long jump with a personal-best mark of 5.29 meters (17’ 4.25”), with Maia Sparkman (Langley, Wash.) finishing 11th with a jump of 4.71 meters (15’ 5.5”). In the triple jump, Mariah Gibbs (Banks, Ore.) finished in third place with a mark of 10.83 meters (35’ 6.5”), ahead of Sandy Dasalla Good (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.) in fourth place at 10.64 meters (34’ 11”) and Alanna McCarthy (St. Paul, Ore.) in 10th place at 10.02 meters (32’ 10.5”).
Zac Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.) won the 200 meter dash in 22.86 seconds after finishing fifth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.67 seconds. Shaddye Melu (Auburn, Wash.) and Austin Thummel-Gravitt (Puyallup, Wash.) went 1-2 in the 400 meter dash, with Melu winning the event in 48.04 seconds, followed by Thummel-Gravitt with a time of 48.54 seconds.
Candice de Sauvage (Foster City, Calif.) won the women’s 400 meter dash with a time of 57.52 seconds, followed by Mandy Rusch (Redmond, Wash.) in third place in 58.93 seconds. Madison Lichter (Snohomish, Wash.) finished just ahead of Alyssa Gonzales (Pasadena, Calif.) in both the 100 meter dash (12.90 seconds vs. 12.93 seconds) and the 200 meter dash (26.76 seconds vs. 26.78 seconds).
In the distance events, Joe Charbonneau (Bellingham, Wash.) finished third in the 800 meter run with a personal-best time of 1:55.67, while Louis Rodrigues (Alameda, Calif.) also posted a personal best mark of 1:56.58 to finish in sixth place. On the women’s side, Alisa Poplawski (Newcastle, Wash.) finished in fourth place with a time of 2:18.01, and both Lila Rice (Redmond, Wash.) and Moira O’Connor Lenth (Seattle, Wash.) earned personal best times, with Rice finishing seventh in 2:20.92, followed by O’Connor Lenth in eighth place in 2:21.60.
Rice also finished in fifth place in the 1500 meter run in 4:44.19, followed by Madison Davis (Camano Island, Wash.) in seventh place in 4:47.31, O’Connor Lenth in eighth place in 4:49.54, and Poplawski in ninth place in 4:51.60. Emily Hedberg (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished in sixth place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:30.60, and Meghan Arigo (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) crossed the finish line in third place in the 10,000 meter run in 40:31.45.
Freshmen performed well in their first collegiate 5000 meter run, as Chay Weaver (Louisville, Colo.) finished in second place in 15:19.25, just ahead of Ben Monk (Olympia, Wash.) in third place in 15:20.02, while Collin Olson (Newcastle, Wash.) finished in 15th place in 16:02.23. Tyler Flannery (Auburn, Wash.) finished in 13th place in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 33:32.18.
Rebecca Lassere (Boise, Idaho) crossed the finish line in fifth place in the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:13.96, while Nathan McLaughlin (Puyallup, Wash.) finished third in the men’s 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:02.91. Elsewhere on the track, Katie Fleming (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) finished seventh in the 400 meter hurdles in 67.55 seconds, just 1/100th of a second off her own school record, while Abby Wachter (Beaverton, Ore.) finished ninth in 68.31 seconds.
In men’s field events, Nick Redlew (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.21 meters (43’ 4.25”) and 14th in the long jump at 5.79 meters (19’). Devon Walker (Ventura, Calif.) finished sixth in the discus throw with a mark of 42.59 meters (139’ 9”), and Malaki Seanoa (Everett, Wash.) finished seventh in the javelin throw with a season-high mark of 54.34 meters (178’ 3”). Chris Scaffa (Lake Oswego, Ore.) posted a personal-best mark of 49.16 meters (161’ 3”) in the javelin throw, plus he finished in 13th place in both the discus throw at 39.74 meters (130’ 4”) and the hammer throw at 43.55 meters (142’ 10”).
The Seattle University track and field team will head to California next weekend for the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azuza, Calif., and the Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif.
