Led by the lowest round of the day, the Seattle University men’s golf team finished in second place, the team’s fifth top-three finish as a team this season, as play concluded Tuesday at the second annual Redhawk Invitational, held at Chambers Bay Golf Club.
“This has been an unbelievable week. The weather cooperated, the golf course was in the best condition I have ever seen it, and the support we received in hosting this tournament was immense,” Seattle U head golf coach Marc Chandonnet said. “As for my team, I am excited about where they finished in this tournament.”
Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) posted the lowest round of the day, shooting one-under-par 69 thanks to three birdies and an eagle on the par-four 16th hole. He moved up into a tie for eighth place in the final standings at 218 (+8), his best finish in a multi-team tournament of the year.
Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) had a roller-coaster ride during his round, finishing with a 76 (+6) to end up in a tie for 12th place at 222 (+12). Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) finished par-birdie-par to post a third round score of 74 (+4) to finish the tournament in a tie for 15th place at 223 (+13).
Jamie Hall (Seattle, Wash.) started his round with two birdies over the first three holes, but finished with a score of 76 (+6) to also end up in a tie for 15th place at 223 (+13). Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) shot 80 (+10) to finish the tournament in a tie for 24th place at 225 (+15).
Seattle U was one of just three teams to break 300 as a team, posting a score of 295 (+15) for the second consecutive round to end the tournament in second place at 878 (+38), five shots ahead of third-place TCU. Washington won the team title with a 54-hole total of 854 (+14), with the Huskies’ Frank Garber holding on for medalist honors at 212 (+2) by one stroke over teammate Corey Pereira.
Seattle University now prepares for the Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships, taking place April 20-22 at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. A victory by the Redhawks will qualify them for their first appearance in the NCAA Division I Golf Tournament since reclassifying as a Division I program.
