The Redhawks will conclude play at the LMU/Muscle Milk Softball Invitational on Monday, Mar. 23, facing Loyola Marymount for the second time this weekend at 11 a.m. PT.
Game 1: Bethune Cookman 8, Seattle U 3
The game scoreless through one and a half innings, the bottom of the second would prove detrimental for the Redhawks as Bethune Cookman jumped out to a 5-0 lead on four straight RBI singles, all with two outs.
Seattle U scored one in the top of the third on an RBI triple down the right field line by Molly Campbell (San Diego, Calif.), but left the bases loaded to end the inning. The Redhawks added single runs in both the fifth and sixth on an RBI single from Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) and a sacrifice flyout by Campbell.
BCU scored two more in the bottom of the third on a two-run single to center field from Calesha Shelley and a run for insurance in the sixth on a sacrifice flyout from Nereyda Gutierrez.
Seven different Redhawks tallied one hit apiece while Campbell led with two RBI.
Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing six runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two in the two inning outing. Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) entered in relief, giving up two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out one in four innings of work.
Sabrina Anguiano picked up the win for Bethune Cookman allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three.
Game 2: UC Riverside 5, Seattle U 1
UC Riverside struck first as Kaylynn Pierce scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first before the Redhawks tied the score, 1-1, a half inning later as Rose Saenz (San Gabriel, Calif.) led off with a solo home run.
The fifth inning would prove fatal for Seattle U as Pierce scored her second run of the game for the Highlanders on a wild pitch before Haley Harris hit a two-RBI home run to left field in the next at bat to lead, 4-1.
UCR would tack on one more run in the bottom of the sixth when Chelsey Holley opened the inning with a solo home run to left field.
Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) was handed the loss allowing four runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two in four and two-thirds innings of work. Davis entered in relief allowing the final run on three this while walking one in one and one-third inning.
Chelsea Ponce picked up the win for UC Riverside allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out five in six innings.
