SEATTLE – Seattle University softball (7-17) took an early lead but committed several errors, allowing Miami (9-7) to put together a mid-game attack as they fell, 8-5, to close the weekend at the Husky Spring Classic.

Seattle U took an early lead in the bottom of the second as Molly Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) hit a three-RBI home run to drive home Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.) and Jenny Hurst (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) who reached base on a single and walk, respectively.

Miami knotted the score at three apiece in the next half inning with a Tiyona Marshall RBI double and a two-RBI single by Eryn McCarver.

Gaining the lead and keeping it for the remainder of the contest, MU would take the lead, 4-3, in the top of the fourth, adding three more in the fifth and tacking on a run in the sixth. Two of the Red Hawks’ runs in the top of the fifth resulted from two SU defensive errors.

Kayla Shuster-Gonzales (Escondido, Calif.) looked to be starting the SU comeback, opening the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer to bring home Julia Bragado (San Diego, Calif.). The Redhawks loaded the bases with two outs but a final out would end Seattle U’s further scoring chances. SU would also leave two runners on to end the seventh as Miami’s 8-5 advantage would hold.

Maulden led Seattle U at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with a run, but Miami outhit the Redhawks, 11-7.

In the circle, Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three. Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) entered in relief allowing the final two runs on five hits.

Amber Logemann picked up the win for Miami in relief, allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out seven in the five inning outing.

After five straight weekends on the road, Seattle U will open the home season on Wednesday, Mar. 11 with a doubleheader versus Notre Dame de Namur starting at 4pm PT. The Redhawks are set to host Texas Tech on Wednesday, Mar. 18 at 6 p.m. at Logan Field.
