Seattle University softball (7-14) won their first game on the day, a 4-1 eight-inning win over Miami (Ohio) (7-6) before dropping the nightcap to the hosting Huskies as No. 19 Washington (20-4) earned a 17-1 win.
The Redhawks will play two more games Saturday, again taking on Miami (Ohio) at 10:15 am before facing Cal State Northridge at 12:30 pm. Links to live stats for all games on the weekend are at GoSeattleU.com and tickets to each game are available at the ticket office at Husky Softball Stadium.
Seattle U 4, Miami (Ohio) 1 (8 innings)
Miami would score the first run in the top of the third as Kat Lee singled home Kylie McChesney after McChesney reached base on a two-out double.
SU left two on base in the third and fourth innings, leaving two in scoring position in the fourth but would tie the score in the bottom of the sixth as Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.) hit a two-out solo home run.
Neither team able to break the tie through seven innings of regulation, a big eighth inning for Seattle U would prove to be the difference maker.
Maulden recorded her second RBI of the game, the game-winning run, bringing home Bubba Morrow (Auburn, Wash.) after Morrow reached base on a single. Molly Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) would add two runs for insurance on a two-RBI single in the Redhawks’ next at bat.
Miami recorded two hits, advancing runners to the corners in the bottom of the eighth, but could not advance the runners home as Seattle U earned the extra-innings win.
Seattle U outhit Miami, 11-8, led at the plate by Maulden hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI and a home run.
In the circle, Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) pitched the complete game win allowing just one run on eight hits while walking one and striking out two in eight innings pitched. Megan Mattera was handed the loss in relief for Miami allowing three runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
Washington 17, Seattle U 1 (5 innings)
Kylee Lahners would lead the way for the Huskies with seven RBI, hitting 4-for-4, also scoring three runs of her own, including a home run. Lahners’ homer was one of three for Washington on the game.
Sara Dominguez (Santa Ynez, Calif.) drove home Kayla Shuster-Gonzales (Escondido, Calif.) for the Redhawks’ lone run in the second inning after Shuster-Gonzales reached base on a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
In the circle, Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) was handed the loss allowing 10 runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out one in two innings pitched. Savannah Loomis (Roseville, Calif.) entered in relief pitching two innings, giving up seven runs on six hits while walking three.
Casey Stangel earned the win for Washington, allowing just one run on five hits while walking one and striking out two in the complete game victory.
